Cleaning it up good is more important than the products you use. Paint won't stick to rust and old oil and dirt. A trip to the quarter car wash after it comes back from the vat, followed by spray can carb cleaner, is a must.

I use marine-grade zinc chromate primer from an industrial marine supplier (NOT a home-improvement store), and either regular "engine enamel", or "machinery enamel", or even just plain old auto exterior paint, depending on what color and so forth that I want. The top coat doesn't matter very much what it is, except that you want to avoid things (such as high-temp VHT) that dissolve in gasoline. Prep and primer is far more important.

I usually paint the interior with electric motor paint of some sort.

I have found that any name brand paint will hold up under summer conditions. If I paint a block that will see the winter though, I use rustoleum or the East wood rust encapsulator or por-15 or por-20.

Also, before you paint it, take most rust off and go over the block with a torch to burn anything off.

Regular high temp engine enamel seems to work just fine for me. This engine was painted in 2000 and the pic was taken a couple month ago.

One suggestion - check the paint on another similar surface first. The guy who built my 350, bought a can of "Porshe Red" from somewhere, thought it would be a nice red color like any of us would think. He painted the block, and left out of town for a week. When he returned, the dried block was Hot Fushia Pink! So now, I have a hot fushia pink motor! (hey, it was cheap)

It's got to be fast enough, I can't afford to stay around long - too much crap to hear about having a pink motor! LOL

AND - if that wasn't enough - my brother got me new plug wires for Xmas - ordered them online - a nice pretty red picture on the Internet. Also, a nice pretty red picture on the box label. BUT - when we opened the box Xmas day..... can you guess what color the wires are? YES!!!! Hot Pink!!!!

I'm destined to have pink I guess! You gotta love it!

Well at leat that was an accident. One of my parents freinds wanted my Dad to build him a 360 for his power wagon. Mike the owner of the truck had the intake hood hardware and a few other nicknacs powder coated pink! The rest of the engine was gold. Hard to beleive Mike was in special forces.
