HELP - Belts keep turning after I turn car off

84 Trans Am - 383 Stroker

I was out driving, ran to get groceries. On way home i got on the road and i basically punched it , all of a sudden started making this weird noise under the hood like something came loose and was banging around.

I pulled over turned off the ignition and the car was still making a noise under the hood, i popped the hood and the belt was still turning, i had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop.

This is my first project car and im pretty n00b under the hood but im in the process of learning. Ran across this helpful board and am hoping somebody can help me out.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

It's dieseling from either too much timing, heat in the chambers combined with unburnt fuel in the chambers. Any combination of those things will let the engine run-on without the ignition being on.

but its just the belt spinning still u know? the engine is off. Its just the belt turning by itself when car is turned off.

WTF? I'm not even sure how this could happen!?!?!?...... a belt that's maybe way to big? Are the pulleys still spinning too or just the belt? Which belt is it? If you have an electric water pump and it's that belt then I'm not sure.... maybe a short or something.

Its the main belt - the serpentine belt. It just keeps going and going while making an annoying noise. This happen right after i punched the gas.

Im just really confused as to why it would keep turning after i turn car off and only stop when i d/c battery. And automatically start up when i plug battery back on with out starting car.

Are the pulleys still turning or is it just the belt. If the pulleys are turning then the crank could be turning and the above response of it "dieseling" could be the case. A little more detail as to what exactly is turning mgiht help a little.

Yes Pulleys are still turning - engine is OFF. Car OFF - belt still turning.

I had stopped at the gas station, filled it up. Got on the street and didnt floor it but gave it alot of gas and then heard weird noise, then the noise continued but car drove still, i lived literally around corner so i pulled into driveway turned car off, noticed it was that there was still a weird "wooom wooom wooom wooom" opened the hood and the belt was still going. Unplugged the battery. Waited about 5 mins plugged battery back up. And "wooom wooom woooom wooom" belt turning again.

Excuse me if i'm slow on this stuff, newbie but trying to learn.

Thanks for you all's help on this one. THese boards are great and the people who take the time to help others is pretty cool.

Maybe your alternator had a sex change and turned into an electric motor.

LOL! Hey ME_Leigh how's the 305/LT1 running?

Maybe the belt got thrown and it got caught in your fan somehow and that's going as soon as the car battery is plugged in? That doesn't make much sense because even if the fan switch is grounded, it shouldn't come on until accessory on (key forward, but engine not on), but hey, in this case, nothing makes much sense, and anything is possible.

Do you believe in ghosts?

The combo is running awesome. Its tons of fun to drive around. I can't wait till spring so i can actually do some auto-x racing. I will keep you informed, i still need to do some carb and timing tuning. I think i might have a vacuum leak between the lifter valley and the intake.

No electric water pump. Is it possible for the starter to get engaged at a High RPM. Possible making that Wooom Wooom WOoom sound and keeping the serpentine running?

Its a weird one.

Im going to try making sure the belt iis aligned. And checking the starter / alternator.

if the accessories are still spinning with the car off it HAS to be the starter engaging... Nothing else could generate enough power to spin the entire motor over.

Yah someone just message me that the starter is stuck at a high rpm and to tap it with a hammer or replace if that doesnt work.

Anyhow - looking at you alls suggestions im thinking maybe there is a combination of a couple things.

"It's dieseling from either too much timing, heat in the chambers combined with unburnt fuel in the chambers. Any combination of those things will let the engine run-on without the ignition being on."

WHen i tried to shut the car off initially it wouldnt shut off – thus maybe like you said it was "dieseling", i turned key back on and then turned to off and it turned off and belt was still going. Maybe it engaged the starter and the starter got stuck? If the starter got stuck should the flywheel have gotten tore up?

Thanks for all the help/suggestions - u guys rock.

My guess is that the starter is still engaged, I'd unplug the battery, because eventaully you'll overheat and complete blow-up the starter if it is engaged too long.

does your car sound like it wants to turn over whenver the car is on the off position. my friends sister in law had something similar that happend in her forde probe. It ended up being the starter solenoid was stuck and was trying to turn over the engine while the key was out of the car.

Yah it does kinda sound like that. When i get home i'm going to use all these suggestions and do a process of elimination.

Checking selenoid / ignition switch / starter / alternator / making sure belt didnt jump.

Dont worry about the flywheel. The starter's gear is a softer metal than the flywheel, to prevent damage.

By buddies truck used to do the samething, ended up being the solenoid. His was externally mounted on the firewall, and at first we were getting low amp units, that would arch open, and keep power going to the starter. We ate up a couple starters, and solenoids untill we found a higher rated unit.

If you get a new starter, get one with as long as a warranty as you can get. Ive replaced 2-5 per vehicle ive owned in the last 3 years.
