How do I reconnect the speedometer?

Ever since I bought my car the speedometer has been disconnected. I have no idea where to look to see where the cable for the speedometer hooks up. Do I have to take off the transmission or can I just go under my car and hook it up. Please help, this is the one thing preventing GM from giving me a new engine from my warrenty.

Transmission: auto
Remove the speedo and look in the back to the left of the dash for the cable first, it just plugs in.

If it is connected at the back where would be the next place to look?

Transmission. Now that I think about it, some cars--and I don't recall the years--had a two-piece cable. Does your cruise control work?

At the transmission driver's side of tail. It's a flexible metal cable.

I don't have cruise control. Im not sure if it makes a difference but I have a 4-speed manual tranny.

Can I get access to that by just going under the car or did I need to disconnect the tranny from the engine?

Just crawl under. If the speedo cable is unattached, you'll see it hanging. Clean the end up a bit and put it in place. You'll see what needs to be done.

I just have a question, why is GM going to give you a new engine from a warrenty? Was your transmission ever swapped maybe from an auto to a manual or were your gears changed? usualy people dont just disconnect speedos, i know mine is not hooked up b.c when the engine tranny rear swap was done nothign was the same, plus it was an older tranny with a newer speedo setup... good luck.

When I bought the car it already had the speedometer disconnected. A few weeks after buying the car the engine died so I bought a Goodwrench 350 with a year warrenty. But not having the speedometer hooked up voids it. Since the new engine blew I need to reattach the cable so I can get a new engine with labor included.

I can't get the cover off the speedometer, the bolts are stripped. I found this cable on the other side of firewall, is this the speedometer cable?

Here's a pic of it in relation to the engine:

Perhaps the following link will provide a bit of info:

https://www.thirdgen.org/techbb2/sho...hreadid=249244

You should be able to see where the cable enters the cabin from inside the car. The one in the pic appears to be much too high--what the heck is that plastic gizmo?

Ok that link did help but I'm having trouble getting the faceplate off the speedometer. The screws are stripped. I tryed drilling a hole in the middle but nothing will grip the screw it just shaves more of it off. Any suggestions?

You don't need to get the face plate off the speedo. Take off the dash pad. Now reach or look behind the speedo thru the spaces in the top of the dash.

I highly doubt someone would disconnect the speedo from the gauge. I'd look at the trans first.

The speedo cable comes thru the firewall a little underneath the power brake booster.

Your right, no wonder that bolt didn't come off, it was just for show . After looking behing the speedo I saw that the cable was connected so it has to be at the tranny. Im going to have to wait till tomorrow so I can borrow some jack stands to get under the car. Thanks for the help so far guys!
