computer controlled cam

i am going to keep the tpi setup and i am swapping my cam do i have to stay with a computer controlled cam ?

Dude, I am still learning, but I was calling around today, and acording to Comp Cams, he said I can keep all my stock equipment, including my computer, and put a bigger cam in with no problems. Another member had posted on here that one big thing to watch is keeping your 112 degrees of lobe seperation. This will keep the vacum high enough at idle that the computer wont wig out on ya. Even a 110 deg cam will mess with ya a bit. I am still working on lift and duration. I have seen alot on here about a zz4 cam, but not REAL sure what is up with that. Looks like it will require better valve springs.

Try a search on "zz4 cam"

i am looking to find a cam that will work well with my tpi and i was told that i should stay with a computer controlled cam so i do not have stalling and driveability issue's is this true

There are cams designed with stock-type EFI in mind. Comp Cams has a line of XE cams specifically for TPI motors. Go check it out!

I think they meant you need a cam designed for computer controlled engines. I believe the '87 has a roller cam (uses roller lifters.)
I have a '88 IROC 388 non-roller TPI with the XE262H-14, heard ZZ4 is not really designed for TPI, but will work with MAFs. I'll probably bump it up later, but it has to pass emissions.

A cam designed with EFI in mind will run better than one picked off the shelf. EFI needs to have things like duration, overlap, and ramp rates controlled differently than carb engines can get away with.

Comp will tell you which cams will work with EFI. Listen to their advice.

I've had better results by emailing them. Don't have the time limitation that a tech support type has on phone calls. Be sure to give them all details about your combination, including the engine size, modification (porting, for instance), exhaust, transmission, rear gears, car weight, intended use, etc. - the more, the better.

Also be aware that their recommendations are typically conservative. They'd rather take a chance with you having slightly less power than ending up with something that doesn't drive well.
