how long can i leave my heads off?

I have to tow my car to the shop for a rebuild anyways, but i want to take a good look at my heads. If i take them off how long can i leave the motor like that before i dont know it starts to rust i guess? I know to cover up the cylinders obviously.

cover evreything with auto trany fluid, just a real thin film, and dont worry bout it. It is oil based, and has many detergents in it,and holds up great over time.

I just pulled my heads off this morning and took and got all the antifreeze out. Then sprayed all the cylinders with PB Blaster and stuffed paper towels in the cylinders that were on the down stroke. Then layed a towel over everything.

i have friends that are much smarter than i and they say that is good for short term storage1 month or less, and must be re-done if left longer than that. same friend has a old 327 sbc that has machined by him almost 4 years ago that he rubed down with atf,and baged and it does not have one spot of rust on it after all that time. In the shop he works in they have blocks that have ben sitting longet than that in same perfict condition.

Rust Check works the best for protecting exposed metal parts. you can get it in spray cans at CTC.
Much better than AFT or WD 40.

I 've left my motor with heads off outside all winter coated with rust check and wrapped up with garbage bags to keep dirt out.

RUST CHECK

There is no better.

Scribbles : this is a Canadian product but is available in the USA. Look for it at Carquest or NAPA. Check it out.

A metal part coated with WD 40 will eventualy rust. Trust me on this one. I've tried it. Rust Check is much better.

i agree with you on the wd40, i was saying it would be ok for SHORT term, i always use atf and it has worked, but takes a lot of time to do.. i will difenitley be checking out the rust check stuff. it would be nice to have a long term solution you can just spray on.

My block has been sitting with no heads for almost 6 months now. when i first got it, it was just in a plastic bag. i oiled up everything with some 10w30 i had and it stayed like that for about 4 months. then i finally moved the engine to the shop, inspected it and their was not a single spec of rust or corrosion to be found. I oiled it up again but shrink wraped it this time because of all the dust and crap.

A bit of oil and shrink wrap or tape a bag around it and you will be good for a long time!

i left one head of my 355 for 8 months and the only rust i saw was in the water jackets.

Fogging oil is made specifically for keeping engines in storage from rusting...
