Hey guys. I've been lurking here awhile, trying to learn what i can

I have an '86 w/ the 2.8 and plan to swap in a 350. To help with the swap I've got a hold of an '83 z28 w/ a lg4. Also the '83 has a new Accek distributer, new Holley carb (guy said it was 600cfm, not sure how to check), and a Weind intake of some sort (again, not sure how to check). I just picked up a 350 shortblock today, but I have some questions for you guys.

This car is and still will be my daily driver, but I'll be taking it to the strip too.

1. Heads - I have #416 heads on the '83 lg4, but not sure if they're worth building money wise. I'm kinda worried that they'll make too high compression too. Not sure what to do

2. Cam - I know this needs to be figured out after heads, just wondering what you guys think.

3. Exhaust - Long tubes, are they worth it? Or will running the Hooker 2055s be good enough? What type of cat-back is easiest to instal, and provides the most performance? I live in Kansas, so emissions isn't an issue.

4. Oil pan - I'm pretty sure the lg4 pan will fit the 350, just want confirmation.

5. Motor Mounts - I can take these off the '83 also, right?

6. Transmission - The '83 has a 700r4 swapped in, originally a 3 speed auto. I've seen something about certian year 700s better than others, how can I find out what year is in the '83?

Here are the 350 short block specs:

Block - Fresh Bore (0.060) & Power Honed,Fresh Decked, Square to Mains
Pistons - New Speed Pro Flat Top
Crankshaft - Race Prepped, Fresh Turned, Chamfered & Micro Polished
Connecting Rods - Matched Set 5.7 GM, Side Clearanced & Shot Peened, Checked and Resized
Other - New Hastings Rings, New Cam Bearings, New Fresh Plugs, New King Rod & Main Bearings

Thats all I can think of for now, thanks for responses in advance.

If this is the wrong forum for this, I'll move it.

Daily driver+ strip is too vague to answer 1-3. How fast do you want to go? Your oilpan on the lg4 is for a 2 piece rear mainseal passengerside dipstick, used from 81-85 (correct me if i'm wrong). Your 350 must be the same if you want to use it. I think you're right about the moutor mounts but they may need replacing from age. I don't know about the trans. I expect you'd have to get some numbbers off it and research.

You can use the '83 motor mounts, but I'd suggest poly inserts when they move from one car to the other.

The carb "list" number can be found stamped on the front surface of the choke horn. From that, the CFM can be determined.

The 416 heads are a decent base if ported and larger valves installed et al. The piston choice should be withheld until you determine what heads you're going to use and what the chamber volume turns out to be. Smaller chambers and dished pistons are really the best way to get performance compression.

Since you're mostly talking about the building of a 350 rather than the swap itself, I'll move this to Tech.

Thanks for the info on the pan, I haven't had a chance to look yet tho. I'll definately invest in poly inserts for the mounts and a matching tranny mount. Do you guys know where to look for the tranny numbers and where I run them?

I looked up the carb numbers and it appears to be a 600cfm 4160. I'm looking to make around 350rwhp, so I should probably start looking for a 750cfm carb, right?

Also I was wondering if the aluminum l98 heads off of a Corvette would be good for trying to reach my hp goal? Do you know where I could get complete specs for them? I would use the search but its diableded right now.

Again, thanks for the replies.

1. the 416s arent a 'bad' head, flow somewhat decent for stock castings and can have the **** ported out of them to flow pretty good. Cant tell you what your compression ratio would be like unless we know what pistons your running and its deck height.

2. too early in the game for me too call

3. Unless you want to run dual exhaust you will be in alot better shape getting the shortys with the y-pipe to go with it.

4. oil pan will be fine depending on the style of block you have (driver/pass side dipstick)

5. Mounts you should be able to swap, i would reccomend spending a few bucks and picking up a new set of OEM or even some poly mounts, same goes for the tranny mount.

6. the post 87 700R4s are the ones your looking for, i believe they had some sort of rainbow shape design where the cooler lines run into the trans which would identify the revised trannys. Maybe someone else knows an easier/different way to tell...

I've been looking around the last couple of days and found a few things. Wondering what you guys think of these:

- Heads: Aluminum, 210 cc intake runner, 64 cc chamber, angle plug. The heads come complete and include bronze valve guides and hardened valve seats. The heads are assembled with stock length one piece stainless valves: 2.02" intake and 1.6" exhaust. The springs are 1.260 diameter, set up at 125 lb.s on the seat and will cover .600 lift. cromoly streel spring retainers and 7 degree locks. The springs are sitting on hardened spring shims to protect the aluminum srping seats in the head. US Seal positive viton valve seal is installed on intake and exhaust guides. The guides were honed to provide correct valve stem clearance. Valve seats were cut and valves lapped in, then the valves were back-cut to optimize flow with the 2.02/1.6 valves.

- Headers: MAC headers and Y-pipe for 86-92 single cat cars. These headers are made of 1 5/8" 16 gauge tubing and come complete with a 2.5" Y-Pipe and a 3" Collector. This system includes all necessary hardware and a starter tube for the catalytic converter. All emission hookups and air sensor bosses where required.

- Cam: Comp Cams XE274H Xtreme Energy hydraulic cam and lifter kit for 262-265-283-302-327-350-400 small block chevy, 7812-16 pushrod set, Magnum Double Roller timing set

Just some stuff I came across that looked ok. Will they run good on my short block and reach my 350hp goal? Thanks again for replies.

A little more cam might help, dependent on where you want your power, if it were me i'd keep it right there. I'm running a crane energizer 272 and i'll be at 9.3:1 cr, perfect for my 300+hp goals.

I'd say that your engine should be at or more than 350 hp with that set-up.

The description for the 268xe says that its the biggest you can use with the stock stall, so what would be a good stall speed to run with the 274?

not sure
Can anyone identify what type of Weind intake manifold this is? I have a few more pics if you need to see them. Thanks!

Thanks, I really have no idea what it is. All I know is that it was on the 305 parts car i have. Would this work ok with what I have listed above?

Here is a side shot, if it helps any.

Thanks again,
CJ

EDIT: What is the best thing to use to clean oil/greasy parts from a 20 year old engine bay?
