That appears to be you diverter valve for your air injection system. When the engine is cold the air from the pump is sent to the exaust manifolds and after warm up it goes to the cat.

OK if that is the diverter valve. Do have to have it in your car if you have the TPI? Cause when I got my car it was not in there, and I guess the two plugs which are green and tan are the ones that plug into it. Where would I pick one up at?

Well I would check to see if your air pump and the plumbing that goes with it are still there, it appears to be , that hose in your second picture goes to the cat I beleive. I would try to get one at a junk yard because believe it or not that is like a 350 to 400 dollar part. As far as needing it ,that depends on your local emission regulations, but I always try to keep my car as the factory built it . My 85 Z had all the emission equipment stripped off and it took me months of junk yard hopping to get it all.

Is everything in the pictures off your '89 TPI setup?

The top picture is not from my car, but the bottom one is. And I just put 2 more up . As you can see in the top picture they have that black box thing. And in mine I dont have it.

Well, are you trying to hook things up on your '89? Or are you trying to figure something out on another engine? If another engine/car, what year setup is it?

All I want to know is what that black box is for in the first picture, cause I seen it on a few 89 irocs with the 305. But mine was a 305 but when I got the car they put a 350 in it. And on the bottom pics the first one I was trying to figure out what those two wire connectors are for they told me it is for the diverter valve. But what does that look like?

Grr, my camera battery is dead...

Okay, in the first pic, the square box is (as mentioned before) the AIR diverter valve, for the AIR/Smog pump, been awhile but from memory one line goes to the pump, one to the AIR lines on the exhasut manifolds, and one port open to atmosphere...and a fourth going to the line that heads down to the cat converter.

Underneath the diverter box is an electrical connection.

What's funny, I don't recall two 2-pin connections in the same loom on my car, so went out and looked and couldn't spot anything like that up front where your pic shows.

Also, you might want to repost on the TPI forum, someone may reconize them

Air diverter valve is the one with a round top and tube under it with like 3 hoses coming from it, And the smog pump is the the box beside it. So do you still have this stuff in your car? if so could you look under the diverter box and at the electrical connection are there the 2 plugs?

Okay, the square box is for the smog/air diverter.

The round can looking one is for the heater diverter, it should only have avacuum line on top of it, heading back towards the firewall, small line like 1/8in thick.

I'll head back out to the shop with a flashlight to verify for you.

Good thing the rain stopped

Well, I couldn't get the little cover off for fear of cracking it...so I took a quick look in my manual I have for for a TBI/LO3 engine, and it show's two connectors to the divertor valve, I'd assume all would be the same since they all have to function the same way.

Safe bet is they both connect to the divertor valve.

Now I'm 100% sure, I looked thorough my Helms for my '89, and it does show two solenoids in the AIR Diverter valve, and a connection for each.

I bought mine years ago directly from Helms, but cost like crazy, I think it and the supplement was 110.00 or so plus shipping.

Best to search through Ebaymotors
