Help me pick a cam? (not the usual application...)
Well guys, this probably isn't going to be the usual kind of camshaft post...
What I'm trying to do is to build my street car for Speed Week at Bonneville - specifically I'm trying to get my name into the 130 Club.
I'm working with my L98 '89 GTA, and so far I have the following items either installed or ready to go on:
* Homemade CAI w/ K&N;
* HSR intake;
* AFR 195 heads;
* SLP 1.75" headers;
* 3" cat;
* 3" in/out Dynomax muffler;
* 24# injectors;
* MSD 6AL;
and some good tires (SZ50 EPs) that'll run the numbers. What I don't have (yet!) is solid info on what kind of rear gearing would be best for this. I'm thinking of getting a 4th-gen rear with the 3.42 gears, but I'm going to hold off for the moment until I get more info, so figure that I have the stock 3.27s.
I'm more certain that I'll be switching to a 6-speed, so converter specs aren't as much of a concern for me.
I'm told that traction is a big-time factor on the salt, so I guess I need to "tone down" the L98's natural torquey manners, & work on getting a hell of a mid-range pull (the HSR should help there too).
So far, I've asked at least two different sources (Comp Cams being one of 'em), & neither one has responded with cam specs.
The info I've given them is below (in addition to the mods above):
Car's weight is approx. 3650;
Top RPMs will be 6000, maybe 6200;
The CR is 9.5:1;
Stock ECM (I will have tuning done!);
It does have power brakes;
I do need to pass emissions;
I don't intend to use N2O;
and all other things being equal, I'm looking to maximize "torque under the curve".
Anyone here care to put in their two cents?
Thanks in advance.

Uhh, OK... Who's Mr. Phelps??
Is he someone with experience with street cars that might occasionally run on the salt?
(BTW, thanks for the reply!)

dude call the comp cams hotline. even if you do not intend to buy a comp cam they can give you a baseline of duration and lift that you can take to the brand you intend to use

long duration (260*+@.050),moderate lift (.480) for high rpm capability,106* or so lobe centers for power.STRONG valve springs
2.73 gears came stock on some of these cars,synthetic gear lube,new bearings everywhere!overdrive trans.
i would be terrified to top my camaro out! it would go airborne before i ever got there!
better cage it and get a real good harness.130 isn't that much of a stretch though.
speaking of aerodynamics.................................

p.s. i believe Mr. Phelps was the star of the original Mision Impossible! LMAO!
