Sounds like your shop owes you a cap and an align bore job.

No you can't ordinarily just slap another cap on and go; they're machined together with the block they're installed on. While it's possible you might get lucky, the odds against just picking up some main cap from somewhere and sticking it on some block and having it work, are astronomical. And of course to some extent that is influenced by your idea of what's "good enough". But as far as I'm concerned, if a machine shop was to lose a main cap off of one of my blocks, they'd owe me making it whole again.

If on the other hand the cap was already missing when you dropped it off, then it's a different story. Then I suppose it boils down to your word against theirs.

but on the other hand they may have just accidentally forgotten to give it to you when you picked up the block so give them a call and see if the still have it. But by no means do you just slap on another cap.

Give them a call, like stated above they may have just fogot to pack it up. If it was truly lost then they should be paying for the new cap and eating the labor cost to redo the align hone.

You can try your luck slapping another cap on there, but chances are because it wasnt on there when it was align honed its going to cause you some problems which you shouldnt have to deal with in the first place!

oh it's not the whole deal see they had the block for like 4 monthes. it wasn't fully cleaned they never honed it so me and an ex-machinest are gonna do that. they also lost my cam bearings, I picked it up and went on vacation so I am gonna call later or tomorrow to see it they found that stuff.

see the place that did it did the work for free cause a buddy worked there. oh and the boss WANTS the block cause I guess it's outta like a late 60's early 70's. I might see what he's willing to pay and have my 2-bolt done at anouther shop.
