Engine Break In Oil!?!?
i hate this new search...i cant get it to earch engine AND oil etc it will search for one or the opther or both and give me 6478329085 replies...
BUT ive heard around here to run a straight 30wt Non-detergent oil for the first startup...the general concensus around bobistheoilguy's forums is to run a normal oil and a nondetergent is not needed?
can anyone explain some of this to me?

i think you'll have a hard time finding a non detergent oil. i use 30w dino oil with gm additive in it and i forget the exact name of the gm stuff. 30 minutes on that and a change to fresh 30w dino oil for another 500 miles then a change to a multi weight oil.

yep dealer, or I got mine from my machine shop, he has it by the crate.
you shouldn't need it every oil change, unless it's a pretty beat up motor...

The PF-35 has long since been discontinued.
The one to use now, is the PF-1218.
IIRC the Mobil1 oil fliter of the same size is the M302; but I could easily be wrong about that. Go look up the one for a Chevy truck with a 454.
I'd recommend NOT using non-detergent motor oil. That little bit of hot-rodding folklore has been obsolete for at least 40 years now. Instead, I'd suggest Shell Rotella T oil, since it has lots of the zinc additive that's been disappearing from oil made for cars. The GM EOS is a good idea too.

You're not the first person to mention Shell Rotella T oil to me. Good for the break in, or for regular use or both??
Would a big block filter fit (diameter and thread size) on smallblocks?

It's OK oil for regular use, but synthetic would be better.
If your motor has a roller cam, you can use synthetic oil from the start. No need for special break-in oil. People will tell you a bunch of stuff about the rings; that's not true. The ONLY thing you need special break-in oil for in a modern engine, is a flat-tappet cam. Modern rings need no special treatment of the oil in order to break in properly.
Yes the BBC has the same size everything about the oil filter as the SBC.

I run Shell Rotella in mY 383, the GF's 355 and both 350's in my boat. No problems whatso ever. I would advise NOT to use GM's FP1218 as it is a cheaply made filter now. Its not built the way they used to be. Theres posts about this change online somewhere. I would suggest a Wix, Mobil, Bosch, Napa or even a K&N Filter.
