how much H.P.
I was wondering if the rated H.P. of my stock T/A with the LG4 engine w/carb is around 165 h.p.? I had read that a similar car w/tpi is 190 h.p. Is there any really easy ways to boost the h.p. significantly on my car?

that is about right. Theres alot of things you can do to give it a lil life. I would first, know the engine. If it burns oil, or has a lot of miles on it, its probally not worth to do internal mod. But a good start is a nice free flowing exhaust. Our cars stock had some of the most restricve exhaust ever. If the engine is good, then a heads and cam package always works the best. Buy the best set of heads you can afford.
Go cheap on heads and you will be disapointed.

there's a technical database link on the home page. 165 @ 4400 is correct. as to simple ways...bolt ons like full exhaust and a better filter i suppose.

more h.p.
another follow-up question, would it do anything good or bad to simply put a set of 350 heads with roller rockers on a 305? If good ,would I need to change cams? If bad ,what? Would increasing the exhaust pipe diameter from 2" to 2 1/2" from the the cat. conv. back through the muffler help with h.p.?

I cant remember exactly but Im pretty sure the 305 heads are 58cc and the 350 is 64cc. The 58cc if I remember correctly should make more compression so I would if anything port the heads. Yes getting a larger diameter exhaust will increase horsepower. I would go for a 3" , alot of people say that you cant go 3" on a 305 but if you read the article on this here you will see that there is no such thing as a too free flowing exhaust. There is a section on here completely for easy mods for cars here. First I would make sure the car is in good tune; plugs, wires, cap, rotor, coil, fuel filter, air filter etc. Then go for a good flowing exhaust, then work on the intake side, intake manifold, bigger carb, and a good open element filter. And by that time you should have become more aware of what your car is capable of and if it is strong enough to do other mods. I would do a cam change, being as that your cam is prob worn down if it has high mileage, then I would get new valve springs being that they might have half the rating they had when new and are now weaker and not helping performance. Then maybe change your timing chain, I know that on my car (350) that by the time it had 145k (rebuilding it now) the timing chain had alot of slack in it and was causing some problems with timing. Get a new one and then to top it off with a good intake; weiand, edelbrock, etc. and a good carb maybe 670cfm. By this time you should have a decently quick 305 if you ported your heads enough and gave it a large enough cam. And if by that time you have confidence in the motor and go ahead give a good spary maybe a 100 shot. Good Luck

I was just looking on-line at muscle car magazine where they list all the cars, engines and h.p for the car and it says the 86 T/A 305 AOD is rated at 205@4400 rpm. Just curious ,anyone know definitivly?

That's about right; but not for the LG4 engine.
That's the "rating" for the TPI version.
You have the LG4, whose "rating" is about 165 HP.

Thanks, just curious because I had an 82 Z28 with the 305 cfi and it ran about the same as this car. The only good part of having a detuned car is, that I just filled up a little bit ago and am averaging 21 mpg.(mostly highway) I always thought it would be cool to have a muscle car with some "umph", but I guess I will just have to remember the late 60's and early 70's and buy something newer to get that thrill.
