Problem.
Problem.
I have a problem. I gave it a bit of gas and something in my driveline made a bad snapping sound. The car ran but made grinding sounds periodically. I shut the car off maybe 10 seconds after the sound happened. The car will not start. The starter turns the flywheel and the torque converter, but the crankshaft will not turn(the belt does not spin.) Any ideas on what this could be?
PS: I didnt know if this was a transmission or an engine problem, so it may be in the wrong forum.

So the starter is turning...
Are you 100% sure the flexplate is turning? Starter could just be spinning and not engaging...
If the starter IS actually engaging and turning the flexplate then you either lost all the bolts that hold the flexplate to the crank, or you snapped the crank...

i actually had a cam break in half several years ago. pull the distributor cap, crank it and see if it moves.
sounds like either a cam or crank broke.

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
Sounds alot like the center broke out of your flex plate.
Pretty common. Although most people quit driving the car when it starts makingall the racket that it always makes, and it doesn't usually get as far as breaking all the way out.
Not a big deal in any case. Just replace the flex plate.

True enough, my dads 305 truck had a crack around the bolts about 320* around. The truck had a nasty vibration at high RPMs and we couldnt figure out for the life of us what the problem was till we pulled them motor for a swap (the old 305 was tired...) and noticed the HUGE crack in the flexplate!

oh well, of the problems listed in this thread, that's the cheapest and easiest to fix so it looks like you got lucky...

Definately got lucky!
under $50ca to get a OE flexplate up here so its one of the cheaper fixes you will have to do. Other than the PITA its going to be changing it!
