Nothing guaranteed...just drive it as little and easy as possible. It could blow at idle in the driveway one morning or wait months. Just plan on saving as much as quickly as possible to get it taken care of before it does decide to go. I had a front main spun on my 305 that I drove about 300 miles on the interstate and it made it. Didint know it was a spun main, thought it was a rod, but its one of those things that you cant really say for sure how long it will last. The only way to be sure it will go a certain length of time is to not drive it or replace it. So just be easy on it and drive it as little as possible.

Its kind of hard to tell, but it sounds pretty loud to me. More like a knock than a tick. If it comes and goes though, it probably isnt a rod...maybe a main or possibly lifter. Either way, the previous advice still stands. Drive as little and easy as possible until you nail it down or get time/money to fix it.

i asked my auto teacher and he said it sounds like either the timing chain or maybe the water pump if im really lucky, the sound does seem like its coming from the center of the engine also if it is the timing chain or water pump would after market be worth it also would it ever be interchangeable between a 350

Yes - you have to remove the oil pan - but not entirely. You can get the car on stands (or a lift, and jack up on the motor just enough to remove the motor mount bolts on each side, then jack slightly more - just enough to get the oil pan gasket in/out (sometimes you can get lucky and not have to remove the motor mount bolts, but don't count on it). You can jack slightly more, and get the pan out altogether if needed. But there will have to be some raising of the motor in order to get the pan to clear the subframe - even enough to just get the gasket in correctly.
Put in a double roller chain while there, they are only $10 more) and make sure you get it indexed properly (dots on gearset aligned to each other).

Water pump or timing chain? wtf? I know things are a little more difficult to diagnose over the internet but that sounds like a loose rocker to me. Possibly one of the rocker studs has pulled out of the head a bit. Timing chain length, not sure but it shouldn't be really sloppy on a decent old one.

More often then not the tensioners get old and sloppy. When my tenioner let go on my 94 s10, the chain slapping around sounded exactly like the clip he posted. You couldnt tell that the tensioner was gone to look at it either. I hope that ends up being your problem.

Seems to me that, the diagnosis is changing depending on the difficulty of the repair necessary. Timing chain, but not after info that the pan had to be dropped?
The problem needs properly diagnosed based on reality, fact, and some automotive sense (not on the difficulty of possible repairs), then repaired and put to rest.

Take it somewhere and have someone look at it that knows what they're talking about. Timing chains don't make a ticking or knocking noise. They stretch, but that won't do anything except screw up your valve timing. And they certainly don't have a tensioner

k i got the problem solve it was just one of the rockers but to explain it losing all of its power (after the clip) the thing that hooks up to the right injecter was halfway off and the clip that holds it down is broken so yeah i guess in the end it was just a learning experience

my car sounds exactly like yours. everyone was telling me it was an exhaust leak but i had my exhaust checked out and it was fine. I had a feeling it was something to do with the valvetrain.
