How critical is it to wash a K&N filter with THIER stuff ()? Would warm water and dish soap (or ?) do just as well? Air drying vs. compressed air I can understand. Or is this just a way for them to make a few extra snails?

you do plan on reoiling correct? if that's the case I would think either way would work. just their way might be a little easier so you don't have to sit and scrub the shiz out

you would need to the oil the filter. without it the filter is nowhere near as good at filtering as typical. you do not want to overoil the filter thoug heither

Washing: Get a tub of warm water, dip the filter into it. Submerge shake, pull up shake. DO NOT SCRUB THE FILTER!!!

Oiling: Get the spray (different brands work also). Should be sprayed until there is a dark pink/light red tint on the filter surface. Allow to dry for 10-15 minutes.

Reinstall. Drive.

Not that their filtering ability is too great anyway.

Go to K&N's site, IIRC they have step by steps to follow.

Oiling is an absolute must with any type of reusable filter. It is what helps trap the dirt.
