Best mini starter?? Starter weight?
Read some old posts, but would like to hear from some current users.
Any recommendations on which to look into that work for stock applications?
Any idea how much a factory starter weighs in comparison to these?

use a starter out of a 96+ truck or suv. they are the same design as the lt1 starter, but for 168 tooth apps.

Im using one out of a 96 LT1 Vette and its working great at least half the weight of stock !!!

I do need a 168 tooth for the factory application, right?
I'd prefer a new A/M one, but I'll keep the LT1 style in mind.

the stock weighs about 22 pounds, i got one from summit that weighs 14 pounds for $140 they have lighter but they are more expensive.

Powermaster starters. The XS torque is one of the better ones.

I've had good luck with both Powermaster and CSR. I'd say the quality is a little better on the Powermaster though.

Powermaster is a Hitachi starter motor. Nothing special there. About 2/3 of the aftermarket mini-starters use the Hitachi motor. The other third uses the Nippondenso motor. All that the different brand name means, is who made the aluminum adapter block on it, to mate it to our engine. They don't "make" the starter itself.
I have a CVR (ND); I have a friend with a Tilton (Hitachi). Both work great. Both are somewhere in the 10 lb sort of range, as opposed to the stock 20ish.
Jsut about ANYTHING is better than the ancient Delco direct-drive POS from the Stone Age that these cars came with. Including the newer Delco gear-reduction units, like the LT1 one.

GM makes a high torque gear reduction mini starter for the big block crate motors that also works on SBC 168 tooth applications. It's nice, but expensive (I have one). If you look at that 96-up Vortec starter it's looks just about identical to the GMPP starter but costs less than half. It could be the best starter GM ever built.

adjustable mounting block is cool if you ever go with some big nasty headers that might need extra clearance by rotating the starter body.
most likely you need an inline bolt pattern, not the offset (unless your running an older style 400sbc or the like.)

lots of starters show they work with both tooth counts. I run a hitachi brand on mine i picked up at work, it weighs around 8lbs, around 100 bucks, psl-100 part number

you should have a 153 tooth flywheel in your car is it's a stock L98. that is assuming it hasn't been swapped once in it's lifetime. a 96 LT1 starter works great. as mentioned it is agear reduction starter. not sure of the ratio but they give your car a new car type start and start up quicker. i hated they way my sounded when it started up. not ne-more.

it hasnt failed me in all the hard non start condition smy car first had when i cranked it over many times.

You need an inline bolt pattern for a 153 tooth flywheel. I have a Powermaster XS Torque, they are very nice.

Most of the mini's will fit either tooth count since they come with a few different holes in the adaptor body. The Tilton super starters will work on both and being able to re-clock the starter is a life saver. Ive had quite a few different brands, quality and reliability has never been an issue with either NP or HT.

Mine starts up "ok", but if I can get a nicer start and shave off 10lbs from the heavy piece of junk on there now, I'm sold.
I'll compare a few brands then add it to "the list".
