Threads are DONE!

Well I got oil pan to line up and all finally and I got all of the bolts in and screwed down some, then I got to the driverside rear bolt which is bigger than the middle ones. I replaced the stud that was there with an ARP bolt and it screwed in easy, but it never stopped spinning, so I eventually said OH NO and when I pulled the bolt out, metal shavings were wrapped perfectly around the bolt. Now that means my threads are basically gone. I know I have to get a tap set or threadchasers, but what size should I get to fix it, or would it be easier to make the threads bigger and get a bigger width bolt? Thank you guys I am about fed up with this oil deal.

go with the next larger size bolt / tap and you shouldn't have any problems.. may need to drill out the oil pan slightly. the other option is to put in a helicoil to end up with the same size as original.

So a threadchaser would not more than likely fix the threads? I am sure they are probably too bad now I guess.

these are yugos... use a helicoil... they are insane strong and easy to use, plus you can use the stock bolt instead of jerry rigging a bigger bolt.

How do you use a helicoil and where do you get them?

call up your parts store and tell them you want a helicoil kit for the thread size of.... whatever.

It's a helical threaded insert. You drill out your current threads, use their specific tap, tap for the helicoil, thread it in, usually using loctite or something. Then you now have your original thread size back.

The front two and rear two bolts are 5/16"

All of the others are 1/4"

Given that information, sounds like you need a 5/16" heli-coil set. It's money well spent,as it's something you'll likely use again.I keep every size from 1/4" to 1/2" on hand.

Probably not on your back under the car,but I don't see a lot of other options for you.
