question about proflow air cleaner
I have a 1988 formula and I just put a performer rpm intake on and I can't use my original hood anymore. I found an air cleaner that will clear under the hood. but my brother told me they are bad for your car and don't filter well. I was wondering what some of you thought. That might be the only air filter in existence that's worse than no air filter at all. That is, is can do more damage, than good.
You'll understand after you've tried to clean burning molten foam out of your carb; or get that screen material out of being wrapped around an intake valve.
The foam is flammable. Yes, that's what I meant: it catches fire. How stooopid can it get.
That's not a go-fast, or even a dependable daily-driver, kind of part, AT ALL. It's a street-rodder type of part, for entering in those "square feet of chrome" contests that those guys have. You know what I'm talking about; you see some old car with a cool paint job and all that, then you walk up to it and discover that underneath the 2 chrome-plated dominators and chromed 6-71 blower and bug catcher and tall valve covers, there's a 1982 Caprice 305 long block. STOCK. Then when they crank it up, it doesn't have enough power to pull itself up onto the trailer.
Don't waste your money.
Look up F-bird 88's posts on the subject, he puts up the part # every now and then for the old factory "drop base" air cleaner they used on big blocks in camaros in the late 60s. It'll fit if anything will, and it supports a REAL air filter.

My buddy ran one on his 289 and tried to convince me it was the best thing since sliced bread, and "flowed awesome"...
