REAL SCARY moment with fuel pump

Ok so I live in NH and just drove 8 hours home from Rochester, I was lookin at RIT for mechanical engineering with my parents. We got a rent a car for the trip so we wouldnt put 900 miles on our Maxima. So it was like 11:30 at night and we had to bring the rent-a-car back to Manchester airport which is like 30 mins away. I had just put in a new clutch in my car and have to baby it for 700 miles because it is a Kevlar one . So I figure id follow my dad up there and drive back just to put some miles on the clutch. So we are driving up there and on the highway about 5 mins from the airport when my car just dies at 80mph. I had it in fifth and it just stopped running, i was also in the fast lane. The car went from 80 to 40 in like 2 seconds. I pushed the clutch and coasted over 3 lanes and into the breakdown lane. Luckily there werent many cars on the road. I started it back up and it was runnin fine. hmmmmmmm?? So i got back on the road and drove to the airport. My dad drove to the rent a car drop off and I had to loop around the airport terminals a few times cuz I couldnt really park anywhere. So im going past Delta and the car just dies AGAIN in front of everyone. I felt like such a retard. The security guards were *** holes! They made me push my car like a half a mile into a parkin lot. To make a long story short, my dad had AAA plus so we got the flatbed for free to tow it back to pelham after waiting for 2 hrs. It was 4am by the time we got home!

Its sittin in my driveway and I think its the fuel pump. It starts up and then dies a few seconds later. What do u guys think?

Man, that does suck! It could be your fuel pump like you said. That definetly does sound like a fuel problem....I can't really see what else could make a car just die at full speed like that. Keep us up to date on what you find!

Car: Yes
Engine: Usually
Transmission: Sometimes
Axle/Gears: Behind me somewhere
starts up and then dies a few seconds later
Doesn't sound like the fuel pump to me. Especially not if it will either do that repeatedly and consistently or run normally for a while and crank right back up when it does fail, and NEVER just not run at all.

I'd suspect the fuel pump relay or oil pressure switch.

i suspect nothing yet, since you didnt troubleshoot it at all.

keep a open mind, and troubleshoot whats happening.. not what you THINK MAY be happening.

Heck, I've seen ignition modules do the same thing as well as MAF relays on tpi cars. Why doesn't anyone try and diagnose anything first before they post so someone may actually help them. Nice story and all, but it tells us diddly.

Well I found out that I had a clogged fuel filter. So I replaced that and threw in a bottle of injectore cleaner and it is all set to go.
