1984 2.8 running rich

Well the exhaust on my carbed 2.8 smells rich, is there anyway to solve this problem? I tried a higher octane, doesnt seem like you can adjust the car. It has the CCC computer in. Any ideas?

"Rich" on these cars is pretty common. Check your TPS voltage and MCS operation (do a search or the Haynes manual has a pretty good procedure). Make sure your choke is operating properly too.

BTW-changing the O2 sensor the last time this happened on my '84 made the "rich smell" go away.

would the oxygen sensor cause bad mpg's? If im lucky i get 12mpg aver. Also i was going to try to pull some codes and see if that works.

If you're running rich all the time, yes you'll get terrible mileage, although the carbed 2.8 never got good mileage to begin with. My '84 when new was lucky to get 15-17 mpg in city/highway driving.

Yeah, it always has a strong odor from the exhaust, then when you seem to give it the gas it tends to bog out a bit and kicks in. Im willing to bet it has alot to do with the 02 sensor. Do you know if these are hard to replace?

Is that with the overdrive transmission?

Yes it's an OD tranny (I think all '84s were). The O2 sensor can be a royal PITA to get out if it's never been changed or has been several years. You'll need an O2 sensor socket or a good open end wrench and a can of PB Blaster. Spray the sensor threads and let soak for several minutes. You may have to do this two or three times before the old sensor will break loose.

Clean up your choke and all the carb linkages while your at it and make sure to check the throttle position sensor. The bogging you describe happens on my '84 when the choke is sticking but can happen also if the TPS isn't adjusted right.

WOT with a 2.8 carb? You must really want an excuse to put the V8 in sooner than later

The TPS is on the front of the carb (driver's side) and has three wires running into the connector.

Haha, had to merge on a freeway with it, ill have to check that tps, i thought only fuel inj. motors had those. I noticed when i bought the car that the smog pump pully(the thing under the alt.)was diconnected, would that have anything to do with the running rich?

If the carb is running rich all the smog pump will do is dilute the tailpipe gases and add air for the cat converter to do its thing. It's more of an emissions testing thing. There are plenty of TGO members that have physically removed the air pump and the cat from their cars and still pass emissions. In short the air pump may help get rid of the "rich smell" but has nothing to do with the carb running rich in the first place.

Well im going to replace the o2 for sure, then look into the tps. I dont know if its common for these car but of and on the car will smoke alittle out of the tail pipe, i was told also this could be cause of the o2 sensor, its a grey colored smoke.

Well after reading in my haynes manual it says you need to torque the new sensor, can you get away with just snugging it on there good?

Yes but make sure you put some anti-sieze on the threads and don't "snug it" too tight, maybe just a 1/4 turn after you feel good resistance.

Re: 1984 2.8 running rich

Im having this problem again, but now if i go from a stop it will lope a little when easy on the gas, Almost like its bogging out. The carb was rebuilt before so that cant be it. Any ideas anybody. Btw the rich smell is back lol.
