engine pinging / grinding?

well i hate to say it but i searched and what i found for engine pinging is the engine getting ready to **** the ****ing bed

well heres what i have done to it off the top mof my head sure thers more but i will say what i got

knock sensor , fuel pump+filter , starter , tbi unit , plugs , wires , dis cap , all and ever sensor , injectors(55lb) , fuel lines ,

now my car starts rough i will addmit that every gear head i know is stumped on why it takes 3 different key turns to fire it up but it does , and when its hot and turn it off turn it on few sec laters it takes 2 (should only take rev rev boom on) . so that was the focus on me messing with my engine which is a 305 tbi (stock 89) but recently its been doing alot of pinging when your RPMing up and gear changing and you cant realy get on it any more from that , i am doing my timing chain and gears and seals tomarrow or at least by friday and i am pissed that my engine might be going to hell with how much money and labor i put into it(around 2 grand had to bring it to a shop and have the top dogs do it casue i couldnt so like 1.5k in parts 500 labor) after i have my timing checked out i am going for an engine compresson test which hopfuly will come up good casue a budy things thats my prob , but this is the last starw for my car , i aint putting no more into it , if it turns out my engine is going bad i am gonna run it as is and wait to buy a new zz4 engine with a th350

any suggestions help i am about to go base ball batty on my hood

Pinging is usually caused by too much timing. It doesn't necessarily toll the death knell for your engine. Have you checked the timing with a light?

Edit: Just saw you typed that you haven't checked it yet.
