can i just change my lifters?
I read on my hayness manual, that if i replace my
lifters,
i "must" replace my cam at the same time.
but i dont have skills nor will to change my cam,
i just want to dump in a new set of lifter so my engine noise will reduce,
for now.
as of now i have a stock cam&lifters,
so considering mismatch of cam&lifters,
if i get a stock GM lifters from GM, for direct replacement,
will it be ok to replace lifters but not the cams?
thanks in advance!

Is it a roller cam engine? If so, you can replace the lifters and still use the old cam, but here is probably no need to do that... Roller lifters usually last longer than the cam does. Maybe they need an adjustment?

sorry forgot to mention..
my car is a 91 v6,
and I believe its a hydraulic lifters.
my car just past its 191k miles,
and never been replaced so
adjusting my valve might help,
but while im at it I want to just get a new lifters in.
is new lifter and old cam a no-no or something?
thanks in advance again.

i have tapping kinda noise from my engine and its pretty loud.
i sort of pin pointed where my noise is coming from,
it comes from valve train and its probably the lifters, possibly the cam too.
every shop i go to, they tell me its probably my lifters too,
since they arent like ultra expensive and not crazy hard to do(unlike cam),
i wanna take my chance and change them.
but i do NOT wanna do cams, its just too much work and i have no time for now.
so im just wondering if ill have problem just changing my lifters.
i drive my car 60miles everyday, it runs just fine.
its just the noise is kinda loud and i just wanna fix it.

I think it's rockers more than likely.
If your lifters are screwed, there's a high chance your cam is as well, and the bandaid fix of putting in new lifters won't help you.
Hydraulic roller lifters is what you have, and I think they're kinda pricey actually...?
You can pull out your lifters and look at them, might find if they actually are the problem or not. I'd start with rockers, they're easier to get to and check, you'll know if there's a problem there.

However, if the valve train noise is due to a lifter(s) leaking, stuck, or not adjusting due to being varnished, and the bottom wear face of the lifter is not worn, you can either clean the existing lifters or replace them. If you pull a lifter and it shows excessive wear on the bottom contact face, you're looking at a cam as well.
That said, I'm fairly confident your engine uses roller lifters, and you CAN replace those with no problems.

I was thinking that too, but if i disassemble that far,
i thought of changing lifters might as well since motor is at 190k mile
and lifters are worn.
my ONLY question is weather putting new lifters while keeping the old cam will
give me any problem.. thanks. I know it wont solve my whole problem,
but just trying to see if it'll make my noise better.

well, take off the valve covers and inspect the valve train. I'm not familiar with the 3.1L, but valve covers shouldn't mean taking off the intake manifold, and getting to the lifters.
Once you inspect the rocker arms and pushrods, you might find your problem. My money is on that.
If nothing is found, remove the intake and check the lifters. If you find the bottoms of them worn, then it's cam and lifters time. New lifters will NOT help you there.
