impala tune-up??

I know the question I'm asking is about an impala but I believe that the same motor in this came ina camaro and firebird also, so hopefully I can get a little bit of help.

I'm going to be doing a tune up on a buddys stock 1995 car tomarrow and looking at this thing a couple of questions has come in my mind. Can the DIYer do a complete tune up on this motor ( plugs, wires, cap, rotor)? If so how do you change the cap? wires looks like it could be a pain also

The more I look at the newer motors the more I like my old SBC 400, at least I can work on it myself

Wow, I am not to sure about this although I think I know. Didn't the motors change after 92 If you go to your local auto parts store they have manuals for almost every car, and the manual will give you explicit directions with pictures on how to do what you asked.

I was always thinking a small block is a small block but not with whatever engine is in this impala. You can't hardly see the plugs at all and actually had to look for the cap BUt can it be changed?
I think he has a repair manual for this car

Same as the 400! plug's, Gimmie! Wires, pull the cap with wires on, put new cap on, switch the wires to the same location. rotor, only goes on one way. I think you've got ability, so do it! Only problem, right plugs, right gap! you da man!

The cap on this motor( if there is actually one) is at the front, down behind the harmonic damper. He checked at the auto zone yesterday and they wanted $169.00 for the cap and rotor set.
I know the plugs and wires will be the same as mind but I'm still lost on the cap thing.I will check the book later

Thank yall for the help

If the car really is an 95 Impala SS (or a same-year clone from a 9C1 copcar), then the engine is a Gen II sbc 5.7 liter v8 called the LT1, and the distributor is called the optispark (optically triggered distributor). It's located on the front of the block, behind/under the waterpump.

This forum isn't the right one to ask about an optispark R&R on an LT1, but any of the Impala SS websites, or for the 92-97 4thgen Fcars (that also had the LT1) would be, because the R&R issues are nearly identical. You should be able to find many posts/pix among them answering questions that you haven't yet asked. HTH.

kdrolt is correct. The control systems for the engine in a 1994-later B-Body has alsmost no similarity to a ThirdGen V-8.
