what are the chances i screwed up?

heres what happened, i pulled the motor out to put in my cam, figured while it was out i might as well put some new hyper slugs in it, had the crank ground, and balanced the rods/pistons. a friend was helping me put it all together, i put the cam in, then he lined up the cam and crank sprockets. and i think its one tooth off, when i try to turn the car over it wont fire, but backfires out the intake. so it seems like the exhaust valve is closed when it should be open.

my question is, what are the chances ive bent some valves? im guessing really good, but REALLY dont want to have to pull the motor again which is what it looks like i have to do

Are you sure you've got the distributor in correctly?

funny thing is it might not even be 180 out i got hung up on that mine was out about 60 its best to mark #1 on distrib housing an make sure it lines up to that at to dead center good luck the biggest part of this seems to be getting the damn oil pump shaft lined up extreme patience an make sure your firing order is corect

Sounds like a timing issue to me. I say stay with the K.I.S.S principal lol (Keep.It.Simple.Stupid) 9 times out of 10 it is usually something minor that has been overlooked

but having the distributor in wrong wouldnt have anything to do with valves opening and closing. so i dont see how timing would be my issue as of yet.

it's probably firing the spark while your intake valve is open.

to answer your question about the bent valves. i'd say the chances are next to zero as long as your cam lift isn't over .6. you have the distributor in wrong, either move it or pull it and reinstall it.
