help!! timing reading

Hi guys. For some reason when I am going to read the timing the revs start oscillating. This happens when I dissconnect the white cable. The revs start going up and down until eventually the engine stops. I can't get a timing reading like this. Please help.

I believe my est wire is brown and it is located near the firewall on the passenger side. Could have my cars mixed up though.

As soon as I unplugged the EST wire the timing reading goes up and down as does the revs until it dies. I just can't get an accurate reading.

unless you're color blind,
I believe all 82-92 camaro/firebird has same 'tan' wire being EST.
its near the blower motor and A/c accumulator housing..

sometime disconnecting them gives me funny idle too,
but timing doesnt jump up and down and die..

make sure ur dist. hold down bolt is tightened too
good luck
