help with stuck oil filter
ok im doing my first oil change on my 84 trans am well the filter is stuck on it like its been welded on the base of the block ive tryed the meatle strap wrench strap wrench that takes the sockett driver and for last rezorts the strew driver all i have mannaged to do is rip the filter and turn it into a hre glass and it hasnt bugged and idea of how to get the damnt hing off so i can put my new on on
I drive a large screwdriver or chisel into what's left of the base of the filter at a 45* angle and smack it a few times with a hammer, trying to unscrew it in a CCW direction. It'll come off- the rubber gasket is just stuck.
Obviously, when you put the new one on make sure to oil that gasket and don't over tighten.

Was the engine cold or warm when you tried to take it off? It should come off if it is really cold. or really hot but you cant add heat it might catch something on fire.

Destroy what's left of the sheet-metal canister. Get rid of as much of it as you easily can.
Then take a hammer and a screwdriver, chisel, punch, or whatever, to unscrew the base.

STOP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Do NOT take a hammer an chisel to it unless you want to replace more than the filter. remove the body of the filter the insert a two prong filter base wrench ( a pair of needle nose will work) in the oil holes at the top of the filter and turn if it still won't come free it is probably cross threaded. I've used all manner of different tools but the best is a good pair of locking pliers if the above method won't work chances are you will have to rethread or replace the filter base thread. Good luck and when you re-install please pre lube the gasket.

Saliger, as you hopefully know the filter seized on because some monkey (assuming it wasn't you
) screwed the filter on too tight. Hand tight and a quarter turn after that has done fine for me for the last 15 years.

It is not possible to cross-thread a spin-on filter, using the sheet-metal can. It will tear off while putting it on; it's not possible (well, ....) for somebody not to notice that it's not just spinning on like it's supposed to. I've heard of some REALLY stupid crap out of speed lube type places in my day, but somehow I can't imagine that even as dumb as some people say some of those people might be, that they would fail to notice that the last 500 oil filters they put on spun right on by hand, but this one took a 3-foot breaker bar.
Destroy the soda-pop can shell. Use a hammer and chisel-like object of some sort, in a CCW direction, to break the base plate loose.
I wouldn't risk wasting a pari of needle-nose pliers trying to break a stuck base plate loose.
You WILL NOT damage the threads on the nipple in the adapter.

Not possible huh
Well if it's not possible I guess I never paid out on claims in small claims court where a judge sure thought it was possible as well as a nissan dealer who testified that it was possible and I guess that $782 check wasn't possible either. Guy anything is possible. When I ran that shop I have seen things idiots do so as not to pay a coulpe of bucks for a pro to do it. So when you say it's not possible please remember that not everyone shares your opinion. I have rethreaded many a nipple where it wasn't possible. Thank god I don't do that any more.

This isn't intended as a put-down, so understand that before you read what I'm gong to say next.
You have to turn it in the proper direction. I have seen some really stuck-on filters, and in more than one case the person was turning it in the tightening direction. One guy suffered from dyslexia.
Lefty-loosy, righty-tighty. With all of the digital clocks and watches out there, some people really don't understand the concepts of clockwise and counterclockwise anymore.
Again, not intended to say you're dumb or incompetent, but we need to make sure that base is covered.
