Casting Confusion

I have a Goodwrench crate engine and the casting number is 10066038. The confusion I'm having is that on some websites it says the engine was made in 1992 and on other sites is says it's made in 1994. How do I tell which year it was really made in?

Since it was built in either '92 or '94, but has a 2-piece rear main seal, I should use pre-86 parts, correct?

If GM stopped making 2-piece blocks in the mid 80's, then why did they make a 2-piece in the 90's? I got this engine block from a friend because it had spun a bearing and I wanted to use it for my 383. I hope this block is a canidate.

Check the date code cast into the block if you want to know what year it was made, but it really doesn't matter.

GM didn't stop making 2 piece RMS blocks in 1986, they only stopped using them in new cars. That block was cast by GM as an over-the-counter replacement block for 2 piece RMS engines.

Do you think this would make a good high performance block? It's been to the machine shop already. I had it baked, magnafluxed checked for cracks, bored, new cam bearing and new freeze plugs. It was also stoker clearanced.

I sure hope you meant it had spun a rod bearing... If it didn't spin a main, it should be fine.

Yeah, it was a rod bearing. And it appeared that the crankshaft had been shimmed, too. It's strange because the disassemble I did was the first it had been disassembled since the engine was built by GM. Which makes me wonder why it had been shimmed from the factory. It was brand new when my buddy bought it and I got the engine with 40,000 miles and bearing failure. hmm

The year doesn't matter. The RMS will determine your crank (obviously) and then you have to decide on the build. Anything can be built into a performance motor, it all depends on how much money and time you are willing to throw at it.

That said, the bigger question would be if it was cast with the roller bosses or not. I'm guessing not, eh?

You guessed right, it's not, but I am going to retro-fit it. That is pretty darn expensive as I've found out from doing a bit of research. I didn't know that some of the blocks were made in Mexico, but I learn something new everyday.
