what's wrong with my engine???
I have an 82 305 the car will start and can run up and down the driveway until it starts getting warm. the idle is turned all the way up to keep it going at 1000 rpm. I think it has a lot of carbon build up. it will continue to run and sputter whe n it is turned off if it is warm.it shakes some. I can see an oil leak, small, around the o2 somewhere. it doesn't overheat and pressure is fine. it did have a lot of junk in the gas line i don't know if it still does. when it warms up to less than the halfway mark if you push the gas it stalls and you can't go over 15 mph. if you barely push the gas it does this. you can even push it all the way down. it will jerk, shake, and sputter like it's out of gas. the evap.canister filter looks like it was never changed and the charcoal stuff started falling out of the bottom of it.any clues??? my 84 is also dead right now due to bad cyl. pressure. please help???

Holy cow. Ok, start at the beginning, is this carbed or CFI?
How long have you had the car? Know any history?
Sounds like it just desperately needs a tune up. Timing is most likely off, fuel filter, plugs and wires, spritz some water into the intake and hold it at 3000RPM. Keep spraying, until you dump a cup of water in there or so, that'll de-carbon it.

Re: what's wrong with my engine???
If its carbed (which im guessing it is) the run-on is caused by you having the idle cranked up all the way. Because the throttle blades are opened so far it allows for enough air/fuel to still be drawn into the engine and ignited by hot spots after you turn the key off.
Turn the idle screw back out and figure out why it doesnt want to idle. Could be timing, fouled plugs, bad plug wires, worn cap/rotor, burnt valves (no compression in some cylinders) ect...

it is carb. we've had it for several months now but it started problems like the day after we got it. it came from florida and had sat for months without being driven. we drove it up and down the road when we got it and it seemed o.k. but then again it wasn't enough for it to be warmed up. we replaced the plugs and wires which were melted and covered in oil. we did fuel filter and pump twice. i'll try that thanks.

I forgot to add that when you take the gas cap off there has never been any pressure release from it opening. don't know what this might mean thanks

That's normal, you shouldn't get a pressure release when you take off the cap.
Is your check engine light on?
Are the 2 plugs still on the carb? The MSC and TPS? Both working? Electronic distributor working?

Make sure the wiring from O2 to ECM is intact, that should be relatively easy. I think it's a purple wire from driver side, over to ECM on passenger side footwell area.
Computer controlled carb and dist - I was just baiting you, I wanted to make sure you had those at all. When I swapped to a non-cc carb, and kept the cc distributor, those are the symptoms I had.
I don't know about the charcoal canister issues you have. I wouldn't sweat it though.
Plugs look good? All 8 are in good shape (recently replaced?) and clean? No obvious fouling of any?
Plug wires - good shape, recent, (show continuity with multimeter), no burn marks or anything?
Timing - With EST disconnected, shows 4* or whatever your underhood label shows?
When idling (warm), pulling a plug one at a time, and holding it to the block, each one shows a visible spark? (easier to see at night time...)
When hot idling, in park, check idle speed. Should be... I'm not sure in park, but in drive it should be around 600RPM. Check this with the HOT IDLE SPEED screw. (drivers side, low down).
Make sure your choke is pulling off when the car warms up. Do a search to figure out how to do that, I know i've personally posted this before (hint, search with my name to find it). If it's staying on choke hardcore, it could cause these problems.

Re: what's wrong with my engine???
plugs and wires are about 5 months old. with the screw almost all the way in it idles at 600 in drive. if i turn it down it won't start. the car spurts gas out of the carb when you turn the engine off affter it still diesels when turned off. I checked the compression today andthe driver side it 175 175 175 165 and passenger is 180 161 165 178. the plugs all look good but two are a little black covered in soot. they were on the driver side. i know the book says if comp. is high then it has carbon build up in the heads.
