3 quarts of oil a day?!?!?!?!!?

Yeah so my car is using 3 quarts of oil a day! I parked it and let it idle for about 10 minutes, there was no oil on the pavement and it does not smoke out of the exhaust!?!?

Where the hell is my oil going?

Bad rings?
Bad valves?
----------
I forgot to mention that it does smoke from the engine compartment quite a bit! Mostly out of the mating surface of the exhaust manifolds! But there is like hardly any smoke that comes out of the end of the exhaust system?

Rad?

Sounds like it's going out the tailpipe though.

Re: 3 quarts of oil a day?!?!?!?!!?

The only time it smokes out the tailpipe is when it starts up!

It also starts smoking out of the mating surface of the exhuast manifold as soon as it starts up, it doesn't even have to reach operating temperature!?!?!?

Re: 3 quarts of oil a day?!?!?!?!!?

Sounds like oil is coming from the valve covers running onto the manifolds.

you have to have a leak somewhere else.. but i would def. check those valve covers.. if tightening them doesnt help the problem, time to change gaskets..

Re: 3 quarts of oil a day?!?!?!?!!?

smog pump wouldnt effect it, but it may help nnarrow down what were seeing. Also, if oil is dripping onto the manifolds, it wont be a lil bit of smoke, it will be a TON!!! Like a thick black cloud will rise up out of your hood unless your moving 40+ miles an hour. I punctured my nylon oil pressure line, and a steady stream about as thick as a hair was being sprinkled on my driver's manifold, it was so little that the manifolds were smoking it completely, but the second i stopped, a thick black cloud rose up out of the hood. (and the hood was closed)

Also, this is a incredibly big fire hazzard. I think the smoke ritter is describing is incomplete combustion, so you probably have oil leaking into the cylinders. Its wierd that it wouldnt come out the tail pipe, but you car can eat up alot of oil that way.

{insert loud obnoxious "wrong answer" buzzer here}

That's what everybody thinks!!!

They're WRONG. It's actually the single most common new-motor, or modded-motor, or just hacked-on motor, mystery oil leak. The top bolt that used to hold on the bracket, goes RIGHT DIRECTLY INTO the crankcase. Look in that hole and you see the fuel pump drive rod. It won't leak a drop when you just sit there, but when driving down the road, it will SPEW.
