70's 350 questions
Hey all! wow i havent been here for a loong time! but anyways, now that summer is coming up, im gonna start driving the camaro again. Ive recently put a 75-76 350 4bolt main motor on it with about 50k on it. and i was wondering what i could do for a few "cheap" bolt ons that will gove some more hp and help her run better. The motor is bone stock, i already have headers,y-pipe and high flow cat. but i have the old lg4 carb on top. What should i do?

Re: 70's 350 questions
Your LG4 carb is calibrated for a 305, right? You should probably get into the jets and metering rods meant for a 350 to get you in the right direction. After you are at a stock zero setting then you need to increase jetting further to compensate for the exhaust being opened up. I would expect that you are running a bit lean at this point.
Your feedback carburetor may require computer tuning. I can't remember but maybe the metering rods have been replaced by a mixture control solenoid?
What intake and heads are you running? Have you ported your LG4 heads yet? on a smogger 76 350 some ported LG4 heads should bump your compression sufficiently. An aftermarket aluminum intake such as a performer will also give you a little "bump" in performance. These heads and intake can be had CHEAP if you take your time and scour the wrecking yards and ebay.

Re: 70's 350 questions
My buddy with his LG4 just bought a 600cfm edelbrock
Performer carbuerator with a Weiand High performance
intake. I saw a dramatic increase in the way the car
drives just with ditching the CCC/Distributor.
He just left the ECM and whatnot in the car, in case
he wanted to go back to the computer controlled gear.
So, I reccomend If you do change setups, keep the
the original components intact.
Carbuerators are alot simpler to pick out than FI induction
systems, thats for sure.. So you have some flexibility.
Since your still running a 305 with stock heads, I
wouldnt go over 650-700 CFM carb, you wont flow
that much to begin with at the stage your at.
But that doesnt mean you cant accomodate for that
I dont want to say go Edelbrock, thier quality control isnt
what it used to be, but the carb we ordered was just fine!

Nothing. It'll calibrate itself for the primaries. The secondaries is AV tension adjustment and rods & hanger tuning.
I haven't changed anything about the carb "tuning" since I tuned it on the 305. Just the typical adjustments.

I understand that the Computer Control mixture could "learn" it's new setup but there are still jets in there, right? Won't a 350 need a little something extra for WOT under extended acceleration?

Re: 70's 350 questions
well the thing is, my cc system is soo hacked andcut up, I don't think its worth saving. I'd like to keep it, but I think it would give me a lot of headaches. I was looking at one of them summit rebuilt non-cc carbs for about 300 bucks. anyone have any experience with them? and how big should I got for a 350 with an exhaust, heads soon, and maybe a cam? as far as the 305 heads go, should I really put them on there? should I port n polish them or anything first? I know I'm asking a lot guys, but I just wanna get this straightend up lol. the engine bay looks like a nest made out of wires. lol

Re: 70's 350 questions
The heads are supposed to be good for stockers. Lots of people like 'em after they get the 1.94 intake valves put in.
I'd say if you are going non-emissions with a Quadrajet, then a 1969 or 1970 spec 350 carburetor should work good for a start. The jets and metering rods would then get changed to match your tune as you go along.

Re: 70's 350 questions
You can drill and roll pin the rocker studs too.. Then get a shop to finish the job (valve job, guide shortening).
if you do all the porting yourself you should be able to finsh a set of ported 305 heads for less than $500 with new 1.94x 1.60 valves, hi perf stock dia. springs, valves seals and a hi perf 3 angle valve job.
Don't bother asking a shop to port your 305 heads. You'll end up with either a huge machine shop bill (porting labour) or a half ***, half done job. The only way to economically pull it off is to do the dirty work yourself.
