HEI Distrib.

How can you tell if you have a timed vaccum or full vaccum dizzy? I'm trying to time my 350 and with the dizzy unplugged, around 10 deg. advanced runs great, after i plug the vaccum line back in, it backfires nonstop.

Re: HEI Distrib.

"Timed/ported" or "full-time" vacuum refers to the vacuum source on the carburetor. It doesn't have anything to do with the distributor itself.

Re: HEI Distrib.

Your call. Depends on the motor build, some engines run best with ported vacuum, some prefer manifold. You tune it to run well on one or the other, but there is no real "right" or "wrong" way, all personal preference.

I'm not sure why it would backfire when you hook it up, but at least you know that is a full vacuum source.

Well i had it disconnected while i was timing the motor. when i got it around 10 deg. i plugged it back in, i watched the mark on the balancer keep moving until i couldn't even see the mark while looking behind the water pump.

Re: HEI Distrib.

Yea, it'd be up at around 30* or so. It shouldn't really backfire with 30* of timing at idle though. *shrug*. Oh well, leave it with timed eh ? See how it runs then.

Re: HEI Distrib.

about what should base timing be around? It's a rebuilt 350. I'm assuming its a little better than stock, with a edelbrock torker II single plane intake and edelbrock 1405 600 cfm carb.
