First gas smell, then...

Since about a year I smell gas when I stop. It seems to come from the area around the filler neck.
Lately I had the car serviced. On the way to the garage I filled it up, stopped by the garage and noticed a minute later that there was fuel purring down near the axle.
The mechanist told me later that he didn't find anything. all looked well, no rust and stuff. So I left.
Today again I filed the tank, drove about 20 miles and stopped for 5 minutes, when I came back I noticed again some little spot with fuel on the road.

Whats wrong? where should I look first? I don't wan't to loose the car due to a fire or something.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Fuel tank vent valve is a one way check valve to let air in.

Issues such as yours are common when they fail and and dont let air in the tank or cause a vacuum in the tank.

Bad canister purge valve usually takes a lot longer to cause issues.

How can I check this valve? I assume that its on the top of the tank. Can I check it from inside or do I need a lift for this and check from the underside?
