what the hell is wrong with my dam car

this thing is really getting on my nerves, ive had it in the shop for a good 3 weeks now trying to make it run good... its getting 3 miles to the gallon, and its slower than my d*** hyundai, the accleration sucks, it wont go any faster than 60 otherwise it floods itself, the engine shakes violently if you rev it past 2.5 rpms... im really sick of this car, if anyone can lend me some advice as to what might be causing all these problems, ill be EXTREMELY thankful!!!!

I dont believe so, I had the guy at the shop run it for me and he said that he couldnt find anything wrong with it and he said the only thing it might be is the tranny or the tranny kick down cable, but i just had all that stuff replaced and fixed

Re: what the hell is wrong with my dam car

Dont think it is trany related. It could explain the horible acceleration but dosent really explain the horrible gas milage. Take the breather off and make shure the choke is completly open after the motor is warm.

the choke is fully open as soon as i start the car and remains open for a good 20-30 minutes after i shut off the car

Well, here are a couple of things to check:

1. Ignition timing
2. Spark Plug Gap
3. Binding Brakes
4. Trans Fluid Level
5. Cylinder Compression
6. Exhaust system flow
7. Distributor Worn?

The basics are a good place to start.

If your catalytic converter is clogged, it will cause a lot of the symptoms you are describing. How old is your cat?

My truck was bogging down, poor gas mileage, poor acceleration and it wouldn't go past about 55. I was fairly certain it was the converter and being kinda lazy/pressed for time I drilled a couple 3/4 holes in my cat until I had time to go and replace it. You may just want to replace yours. Use at your own discretion.

I bet that sounded off the hook.

Mental is right.... could very well be the cat or even an inner wall of the exhaust pipe has collapsed.

If you rev it, does it have a baffled sound to it?

Might want to check with another mechanic also if he couldn;t find anything wrong.

Yeah it sounded pretty awful, terrible hissing noise and when you floored it look out! But it immediately relieved the problems until I could get under there and bolt up a new one.

Re: what the hell is wrong with my dam car

hey guys thanks for the replies, when i get my new exhaust, im just probably gonna run a straight pipe instead of a new cat... dont think itll make a difference, besides for emissions, and heck it might even make it better cuz it aint bogging down the exhaust flow... I ran through all of the basics, the car is better on gas, but the acceleration is still pretty poor, and my top speed seems to in the high fifties to lower sixties...

so hopefully once i get my new exhaust itll be a hell of a lot better.

Thanks,

jim

Re: what the hell is wrong with my dam car

if i were you id be out there right now hacking that damn cat out. my car wouldnt go over 4000 and would take forever to get up to speed after 2nd gear. i got beat by a v6 monte....i cut that fukin thing out with my saw and it not only sounded tough-er, but i could crank her out to 6 n/p. just go try it to see if thats what it is. BTW, drive your hundai into a lake.

Re: what the hell is wrong with my dam car

heh i would but the thing gets like 2084 mpg.... not to mention it has a/c! the cops in my area are reall aholes when it comes to noise and if i took the entire cat off itll probably sound like a dam jet, but if you guys all really think it is the cat than i will deff either get rid of it or buy a new one

Re: what the hell is wrong with my dam car

Before you start hacking away, start the car and let the motor warm up. When my cat was clogged it glowed a nice and bright red. If yours does that, then by all means, either replace it or cut it off. Don't hack stuff just because everyone thinks that might be the problem. You have to verify it otherwise you'll have a loud car that still runs like crap. Let us know what you come up with.
