glass fuel filter....opinions....
I was just doing a little maintenance on my recently aquired 87 TA. part of my maintenance was to replace the fuel filter. My girlfriend had a mr gasket glass fuel filter with removable filter lying around that she was going to use on her olds and didn't, so I just went ahead and used that...I've heard that glass filters have a tendency to heat up and fracture...resulting in a burnt up car...I've never heard of this until recently...should this be a primary concern with me? are there any people out there that are using glass filter with no issues? wanna know what you guys think.

It's clear, but not really glass.
I haven't been impressed with anything Mr. Gasket for quite awhile, and fuel parts even less so.
Opinion? Get it off your car.

I know people who have them, but they have never had any problems. Do they make them for fuel injected models? Every time i find one of these, it is for carb only engines.

Re: glass fuel filter....opinions....
There hasn't been a glass fuel filter made in decades. There was a thread not long ago about someone who burned their car up with a faulty clear plastic filter, but I don't remember which brand.
Re: glass fuel filter....opinions....
If it matters much to you, I have had one of those el cheapo clear fuel filters twice in my life. Once about 11 years ago because it was cool as hell. And it leaked after a few days. The second time was about 3 years ago when I did the v8 swap on my 87 camaro. I wasnt sure of what was or wasnt in the fuel lines, so I installed one to keep an eye on it for a few days. It leaked from the minute gas went through it. I dont think they are safe or worth the 9 dollars they charge for them.

Re: glass fuel filter....opinions....
Send it to me then. I need one. I had one on my buick, the engine overheated often. I didnt have the new Mr. Gasket one, but i had the an older similar one. The intake never gets hot enough to do the type of damge you guys are talking about. Just to be safe though, i had routed mine, so it was never in direct contact with anything, through a bracket and such.
The type of damage you guys are talkin about could result from a rubber fuel line touching a hot engine. This one in a million chances of something happening is just as likely with just about any other component on the engine.
Frankly i think it does more good than harm. You can instantly tell whether fuel is getting to the carb, and its very easy to tell if u need to change a filter.

I've got it completely out of the way of anything onmy car. Irouted the fuel line from the pump up to the overflow tank, put the filter in there, then to the carb....its about a foot away from the engine and exhaust manifold.

I have not ran one personally but have a few buddys who do. One is on a big beastly 4x4 that gets the hell beaten out of it and the other is a street truck, neither one has had an issue with it and they have been using them for years...

Re: glass fuel filter....opinions....
Thats exactly my point. I HOPE i really do, that the member who got his car toasted, contacted Mr Gasket about this. Thats a serious problem, and he was quick on his feet to be able to save as much of the car as he did.
However, nothing is perfect, and youre gonna get defects like this on just about every new part. Mr Gasket should be informed about it, and if it results in a recall, so be it, but i highly doubt that EVERY filter is bad like that.
If you still dont trust them, pay a bit more, and get a non-see through one.

I'm planning on picking up a better one from summit when I order the internals for my new engine over the next couple months. I just don't want to put too much money into the engine right now.

Re: glass fuel filter....opinions....
IMO, a fuel pressure gauge for 15$ will tell you much more than just a glass filter, and is much safer when using a metal filter. The $15 youd pay for that setup definitely outweighs saving that $15 and risking a fire. Personally, I have a vendetta against Mr. Gasket, and this is just one more thing to keep me away from them.
Re: glass fuel filter....opinions....
No no no no no! Very bad filter. Forget leaks and stuff- I never had a problem with that, but the mesh filter inside is EXTREMELY restrictive. Even just running high 13s with a fresh element my fuel pressure would drop by 2-3 PSI at the end of the run. Installed a SUPER-CHEAP Fram G3 (see-through plastic with non-replacable paper filter inside) and all fuel pressure drop-off was elminated. The glass filters with the mesh element are RESTRICTIVE, regardless of what other problems they may or may not have.
I run that same cheap G3 filter on my supercharged 383 putting 390HP to the rear wheels and it's still not a restriction to fuel flow. For a cheap filter it flows a ton.

Re: glass fuel filter....opinions....
that helps a lot. I was about to swap out my stock pump for a holley I've been holding for the new engine. I picked up a new filter, I'm gonna toss it on in the morning.
