Vortec cam suggestions

I recently started to build an engine for my 1985 iroc which was originally a 305 and now Im going with a carb 350. I have vortec l31 heads "906's" and was wondering what are some good cams that will work with these heads if I leave them stock. (hp/tq specs would be great) and if there is a cam that would work good with my set-up even if I have to rework the heads I'll appreciate the info.

10-1 comp.
350 bored .040 over
Speed pro flat top pistons
3.42 gears 700r4 ( no stall)

Re: Vortec cam suggestions

do you have a roller block? Is the car going to be a daily driver? and finally how stock do you want to leave the heads, are valvesprings in the budget? The kit I have used is like 133 bucks from summit, and works very well. This will allow for up to .550 lift without any machining. It's really easy to get some decent horsepower, but most cams are going to want some more stall. Also searching is your friend

Re: Vortec cam suggestions

It's not a roller block and it will be used for the weekend driving on the street so power is important but I won't be at the strip. I want to know what the best cam ( hp/ torque) I can use with stock heads. but if I do buy a kit what is a good cam that someone has already tested.

I like the HOT cam its 410 hp and 423 ft lbs of torque, the torque is pretty flat, and is a blast to drive. It's also pretty mild mannered. There's an article on chevyhiperformance.com about it.

Re: Vortec cam suggestions

Vortec heads have all this PHENOMENAL flow on the intake side, but the same sucky exhaust flow as any other stock heads.

Therefore, they REALLY REALLY REALLY like cams with bigger exhaust lobes, to help even out the mismatch as much as possible.

Look at the Comp XE series, or the Lunati Voodoo series. Both product lines come in either flat-tappet or roller, whichever is appropriate to your block (you didn't say).

You'll need to keep the peak lift on both sides below about .475", because the retainers will hit the top of the valve guide boss at lifts beyond that. The exact clearance you get varies from head to head, and is usually greater than .460" but virtually never more than .480". About the biggest cam I'd dare to put under them in stock condition without checking EVERY valve for clearance, is the XE262. Alot of people get lucky and can use the XE268. I'd use either of those A LONG TIME before I'd run any GM cam.

Re: Vortec cam suggestions

Here's what I've come up with for my engine- if anyone sees a problem let me know.
Avenger 670
Stock vortec heads (roller rockers)
flat tappet XE262 (thanks sofakingdom)
Speed pro flattop 2 valve relief pistons (40 over)
Air gap performer RPM intake
stock converter (if a th350 stall bolts up to a 700r4 I have a 2500 stall)
3.42 gears
thanks
