now i can do a new HP rating thingy

ok so apparently i have a 327 crate engine... how much horsepower do you think this thing is putting out? when i smash the pedal it does 0 to 60 in 6 secs(realsiticly) and it keeps up with a vw gti and smokes a 240sx, so im figuring its putting out more than 190...

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

i researched the numbers on the back of the block and it matched up to a gm 327 motor... i know that cuz my friend has a gti and they put out 190hp and it keeps up if not its faster than that...

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

i think GM stopped producing 327s in 69' anyway it would be a 350 block and it is hard to guess a accurate(well as close a possible) HP # without engine specs...

has someone been telling you romantic stories about corvettes?

Get it on a dyno if you realy want to know what HP you are putting out, that would be the best way.

well its deffinitely not stock ill tell you that much and the numbers on the back of the block read up as a 327 gm motor... maybe it was just never used? ill take pics of the numbers and info tomorrow... its too small to be a 350, its about the size of my moms jeeps 318 chrysler engine... according to her the size of the engine determines its hp rating...lol

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

all SBC are the same size if it is "smaller" than it isnt a SBC

and if you mean bore size a 327 is the same size as a 350 in bor, a 327 is a destroked 350

now a 305 has a smaller bore than a 350

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

its possible that it is a 327 if it was replaced. try one of those g-force accelerometer computers- the ones that plug in the cig. lighter. i've heard they work pretty good and if nothing else it'll give you a good idea of what kind of #'s you're running. and it not only does hp but it does torque, 0-60 times, 1/4 times, etc. i'm thinking of getting one when i have an extra $200-$300 lying around.

um you do know that a 327 and a 350 at one point shared the same block right?
only difference was the crank and you can't see that from the outside.
also for that matter a 302 up to a 400 are all the same size block externally (not sure about the small journal blocks but I even beleive those are the same. so what was that about size again?

even if lets say the numbers on the block matched up to a 327 engine lets say have you checked the crank to verify? if not you don't know it's a 327 as it can have anything from a 3.00" crank up to a 3.75" crank. if you don't mind me asking here is it a small journal 327 or a large journal 327? what year engine is it and what are the numbers on the block, heads?

how would you know this isn't stock? do you have a car to compare against that has the same exact motor in it?

then to your first question about how much horsepower you have. a little more info would be nice. all we "know" is your car should have a 327 from what you say. we have no idea what mods it has (though you say it's not stock so you should know what mods it has) don't know what state of tune it is in or anything about the motor other then what you think the size is. oh and the other bit of information you give us is a VERY ROUGH guess as to what you do 0-60 in. so based upon the information you gave me and how detailed it is the most detailed answer I can give you right now is between 150hp up to being a horrible driver but yet having maybe 400hp. if that is a little vauge you might want to try giving a little more info

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

I use a G-Tech, and did a TON of research before the purchase. It's very-very accurate. I've used it mostly over the past two years to specifically follow improvements for every modification I've made to the car and drivetrain.
gibsongod716, you are not even headed in the right direction. Don't get caught up in following a 'comparison' of another person's car. You'll need to weigh the car with fuel and driver and do some 1/4 mile times, if you can't initially verify what engine you've got.

My 88 IROC weighs in approx 3750 pounds with full fuel. I had a 240 convertable that would iniially run circles around the IROC, but it weighed 1/3 less, was better geared, 5-speed, etc. You're just not able to compare apples to oranges; it just dosn't work that way.

Please don't take this as any type of slam. You'll just need to find out what engine block is in their first, and how do identify what numbers you should be actually looking for. Sometimes there are multiple numbers on an engine block. Have you been able to even verify what engine was 'supposed' to be in the chassis originally?

Start with those basics and we can help you along from there. Nitro

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

Easy way to determine horsepower is to wiegh the car; go to a truckstop and ask if they have some scales. They will give you a printout of your cars wieght for like $5. After that go to the track and put up a quarter mile time $12 down here. Then get online and find a horsepower calculator on google and do the math! Its based off your ET. Found out im puttin out 205 WHP up here lol, 245 crank horsepower isnt bad at 5500 feet, especially considering that was factory rating at sea level new .

Jesus, I don't know why people have to be such jerks. I'm sorry that I'm new to the car world and dont have much experience yet, i'm just going by what the book said... Thanks to everyone who actually responded to my question, i'm gonna go get my car weighed, and hopefully soon pick up that computer unit.

Thanks again,

sorry I come off a little harsh a lot of times. it's just me but look at what you gave us to work with also. your question more or less reads I have a modded thirdgen but I don't know what mods it has and yet I want to know how much horsepower it has. if we knew what mods have been done we can help out a little more.

with the engine if you really want to know we would need the numbers off the block and the stroke of the crank. though I believe the crank snout will give us the same information being that i believe they are shaped different depending on stroke a lot of times. I could be wrong on that one. but I hope you didn't end up with a 327 as you would be getting shorted 23 cubic inches.

those horsepower calculators aren't the most accurate way to do so. easiest way to find out would be a dyno. even more so when driving the 1/4 is a lot of driver.

the g-tech devices the other guy brought up I dont know about the new ones. the old ones would be ok for an idea of what you are making but not very accurate still.

dyno runs would be the best i have seen 3 pulls from about $60-80

would be easier and absolute compared to guesses

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

Wow!!! Yes, let's lock out the thread.

Jim, although your initial post was obviously lacking in any technical basis whatsoever, MOST of us still subscribe to the idea of: 'No question is a bad question'. Hopefully you can ignore the biased know it all(s) and learn some really great stuff about your car on this site; it's noted to be one of the best around.

And no, you don't need to spend the big bucks to get hooked up to a dyno just to identify what the mystery engine block is in your new hot-rod, or even the G-Tech that some of us use to monitor changes and/or baselines.

If you can, take the numbers you're finding off the engine and (if you're familiar with the internet) find a 'chevrolet engine identification' specific website. You'll most likely find your answer there.

If not, try and use the 'Private Email' function on this site and ask someone who sounds helpful.
All The Best,

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

not saying the dyno would help out on figuring the engine type. it wouldn't as any of the engines can give the same results.
as far as accuracy goes the dyno would be the best option for finding out how much horsepower one puts out. even more so compared to the old style gtechs. the new ones I have no experience with so can't say how bad off they are. the only problem I could see is it would factor in wind resistance to your horsepower readings. either way though one advantage of the gtech though is it will make good for comparisons. cause ven if it isn't accurate so to speak I have noticed they seem to be good and giving recreatable results so you can monitor your changes.

Even finding the numbers on the block isn't going to be the greatest help with finding out engine size though unless he knows the stroke of the crank. at least it is a part of the puzzle though which helps but he still needs that second part. as far as numbers go though www.mortec.com is a site I have used a bit for some information. they might have something for you to find there with the numbers.

and neagan I don't mind questions as you said no question is a bad question. it was just more of how the question was asked then the question itself and some of the replies after his initial question. I'm not so nice at times. but if you get past the intial part you notice I'll calm down a bit and try to help a little even more so when someone brings it to my attention I'm an **** with no real good reason .

Re: now i can do a new HP rating thingy

Ok, ill try and find out what the engine is, i admit im an idiot, i ran the numbers off the heads and thats what came up. Theres a local dyno at a ford specialty shop near my house, im sure theyll test it there, whatever size the engine is, it doesnt matter, what matters is whats it putting out ...

thanks again for the help

Post the casting #'s you came up with. From '62-'67, 327's shared the block only with the '67 302. So, you may be right about what it is.

Heads are a different story. But, post what you've got, anyway.

You can get a rough idea about horsepower if you know everything about what's in the engine - assuming it's tuned properly, of course. Displacement, heads, cam, intake, carb (or whatever induction), and exhaust all affect output.

From performance information, you need to know weight, gearing, transmission particulars, and have exact data such as drag strip performance. Guessing based on how it compares on the street to other cars is a total crap shoot (and I don't have any tolerance for street racing).

Give us all the casting numbers you can get, heads, block, intake, hell even a picture of the engine bay, along with any and all info you have on the car's mods. We'll help ya figure out what's in there haha

My guess is it's a replacement 305 or 350 that someone dumped in there, but who knows maybe some old guy had a 327 laying around that found it's way in there.

If you just ran head numbers then that most likely isn't accurate, 327 heads will fit on a 350 just fine. We need the casting number off the block itself.

Just ignore the guys that give you ****, go back to alot of their first posts here and you'll probably find they were asking the same stuff, I remember I asked all the same questions when I first got into cars.
