spun cam bearing?

Well, I installed a cam last week. Didn't have any problems til a couple of days ago, when I heard a light knocking noise. The noise seems to come from the front of timing cover at idle, but disappears with an increase in rpms. Also the noise is not constant, sometimes it makes the noise sometimes it doesn't. The oil pressure is normal though. Does this sound like a spun cam bearing?

Cam bearings don't get "spun".

Actually i did have a customer that had one "spin" in a third gen chevy motor. (LSX or whatever) The only thing we could figure was that it seized or grabbed and twisted with the camshaft and wallowed out the journal. Made a complete mess out of the engine, he wound up going to the salvage yard and getting another entire different motor. but trust me you'll have MAJOR problems if that happens.

Re: spun cam bearing?

What kind of cam did you install? was it supposed to use a cam button? Please post some more info on the lead up to your problem.

Re: spun cam bearing?

Sounds kind of like you're describing the sound that a fuel pump rod makes sometimes...

Re: spun cam bearing?

What happens if you pry the timing cover toward the engine while it's running?

I feel the knocking though the screwdriver. I guess I am going to have to tear into it just to see what it is.

Re: spun cam bearing?

Does it get louder when you pry the TC inwards toward the motor?

Re: spun cam bearing?

Well, for some reason it stopped making the noise. I started it for a couple different trips and even had the motor get warm, but for some reason the noise disappeared. I won't be surprised if it started again though.

Re: spun cam bearing?

Either I was too tired and forgot to tighten the cam sprocket bolts or the bolts worked themselves out. However, it should be good now and I get to double check the cam timing.
