Need Help with New Engine Combo

My race engine expired this weekend. I hope that heads, valvetrain, Intake system survived. Its too dark and Im too tired to check it out right now.

Assuming the best case... I have a set of AFR 195 heads, vic Jr, 750 dp, and roller valvetrain.

I would like to build an engine that will make a maximun of 350 rear wheel horsepower / torque over the broadest RPM range possible.

This engine will be used for class racing where the max rear wheel hp is the total wet weight with driver divided by 9.5. The cars will hit a chassis dyno and scales after the race.

My drivetrain consist of a aluminum button flywheel mounted to a skeloton flexplate, 3 disc clutch, Super T 10 and 9 in ford with a detroit locker, and 275/40/17 tires. I don't know how much power this eats, but believe someone will chime in.

I am considering on buying a ZZ4 shortblock and picking the apporpriate camshaft. The ideal situation would be to make 350 lbs of torque from 1000 rpm to 7000 rpms. Of course I know that is impossible, but want to point out that the max touque and horsepoer are not as important as the avearge numbers.

Please chime in.

Re: Need Help with New Engine Combo

what other restrictions are there...
valve lift? compression? displacement?

Re: Need Help with New Engine Combo

The only restriction is what I stated. Car weight / 9.5 or no less than 9.5 lbs of car weight per rear wheel horsepower. They don't care how you make it. It is an easy figure to achieve and easy to exceed. The intent is close low buck racing.

A thousand horsepower engine woud require a 9,500 lb car.

My wet weight with me in the car is less than 3100lbs now. I could add weight to achieve better corner balance. So I add 225 lbs of ballast and get 3325 lbs divide that by 9.5 and end up with a 350 hp goal.

Re: Need Help with New Engine Combo

okay the other thing is how high are you going to spin this engine?

how high will they spin it on the dyno?

Re: Need Help with New Engine Combo

I can limit the rpms via MSD chip. They would spin it up to max power I imagine. I have not had them test my current combo as I ran in the unlimited class and therfore have no personal experience on their use of dynos. I believe they would spin it to the rpm I told them or until the chip limited the rpms.

I spun my expired engine to 7000 its seen 7400 a time or two per the memory tach, but that was not intentional. Car either hit a bump and unloaded or hit a slick spot on the track.

Thanks for all the additional questions!

Re: Need Help with New Engine Combo

just trying to get an idea of your restrictions wouldnt want to point you in a direction that would get you in trouble

i would guess cheap means 350... so flat top pistons 64cc heads and any of the 8-412-8/or 8-420-8/ 8-422-8 from comp could get you into the high 400 fwhp should come out around 350 at the wheels then change balast to get it perfect...

also you should make sure this class isnt claimer... one of my friends had his entire car taken by a track for $800 said they needed to keep the racing competitive
