my engine will shut off

my 92 z28 will shut off on me while driving, the only thing i can see that could be the problem is the rpms, which will drop below 500 while braking and will kill the car. i lose power steering and will have to pul off the road to put the car into park and to restart the car. i thought it was a heating problem so i replaced the thromstate with a 195 but the tach will still read well above that. any ideas to what my problems are?

Re: my engine will shut off

When it dies, does it start back up right away?

Do you smell gas when it dies?

If you think it is electrical, I would check the control module under the distributor cap. Also, check your TPS sensor to make sure there isn't any dead spots at the lower voltages.

For non-electrical, it could be a lot of things... clogged fuel filter, bad vacuum leak, failing fuel pump, failing injector(s), etc.

Hope this helps!

Best of luck.

Re: my engine will shut off

why not just throw it in neutral and start it back up? i know its not a fix but pulling off the road while you have no brakes and no power steering is dangerous. i put my car into a pole that way in high school.
