Mist Water in Engine to Steam Clean it?

So you rev your engine to 3k or so, then mist water into it...

The water turns into steam, loosens carbon and deposits by "steam cleaning", black smoke exits tail pipe... repeat every 30 seconds or so...

I've heard about this many places... I've also heard about GM Top End Engine Cleaner....

So has anyone done this with good results or bad?
I have a TPI, should I?
Any other products I should look at???

Re: Mist Water in Engine to Steam Clean it?

I used to do that with great luck on carbed and tbi engines. Never really had one of my tpi engines get bad enough deposits to go to the trouble but i dont see any reason it would hurt.

It works fairly well, but its also a quick way to plug up a cat.

Re: Mist Water in Engine to Steam Clean it?

Seafoam? You might as well roll up a $5 bill and set it on fire. Get a gallon of windshield washer solvent for about 79¢ and do some real cleaning. The methanol in the washer solvent will clean a lot better than the isopropyl alcohol in the Seafoam. The rest of the solvent is waer and blue tint, and the water will clean a lot better than the 10% water in Seafoam. Use a small (about 5/32") vacuum line and adminster the washer solvent through engine vacuum. 3,000 RPM isn't necessary. Just keep it at a high idle to about 2,000 and let it ingest the whole gallon. Make sure the engine is at full temperature before you begin.

Re: Mist Water in Engine to Steam Clean it?

BG sells a great product which many mechanics use to clean intakes, fuel injectors, etc etc. they do have their own machine to create a fine fine mist at a certain pressure depending on engine. ive used it on many cars and it cleans them very well, as you can see all the buildup exiting through the exhaust once it starts cleaning.

Re: Mist Water in Engine to Steam Clean it?

yes ..I've been doing it for years. The only thing that I needed to do is remove and clean the EGR...since the carbon will get into it and cause problems. I had a 1984 302 CFI Mercury Cougar with 400,000km ...ran great!!
And yes...be careful of the CAT!
