Help with cam selection..

The setup in my sig is pretty accurate minus the cam, i upgraded to a voodoo cam with 504/525 lift and 276/284 for adv duration and went back to 1.5's.. supposed to be good for 2200-6400 powerband but it falls hard at about 5700.. I plan on upgrading the heads again to Edelbrock Etec 200's and swapping from a hydraulic to a mechanical flat tappet cam as i was told it would give me a broader torque curve.. Its mainly street driven(light to light races often) but i also hit the track every now and then.. Does anyone think I should do the cam swap(any suggestions) or maybe my heads are just limiting my rpm range? Any help and info would be great thanks! Also if the heads are the problem after swapping them should i put the 1.6's back on to raise the lift?

Re: Help with cam selection..

The camshaft is NOT your problem. Address the cylinder heads, that is where the power and rpm is lacking. Also, I would put the 1.6 rockers back on the intakes. ARN

Which valve springs did you put on it?

Re: Help with cam selection..

It's probably valve float. The Vortec heads will handle that cam just fine.

RPM is also limited by the weight of your valve train. What pushods are you using? Stock? Chromoly? Those Pro Magnums are solid rockers, but their heavy compared to aluminum rockers. Also, hydraulic lifters don't like high RPMs, that's another reason racers use solid lifters.

Re: Help with cam selection..

If the engine feels like it is hitting a rev limiter, it is likely valve float. But valve float can also show up as softening on the higher rpm (valve bounce). If it is just running out of breath, it should feel different. The springs should have been checked when the engine was put together. You could pull a set of springs off the car and check them. Check at least one intake and one exhaust and measure the installed height of both. Or, you put a good set of heads on it(with good springs) and kill two birds.

Re: Help with cam selection..

i'd adjust the valvetrain stuff like mentions...new springs and such. but going to etec 200's will probly net more hp gains all around with that cam. should pull to 6000 easy with right valvetrain
