Enigine Dying At 30mph

Sorry, this isn't third gen related, but I thought maybe some of you engine gurus could help me out. My friend has a 1988 Grand Am, and he said he can smell fuel and the engine dies at 30mph. I have no idea where to begin to figure out what it is, but I would like to help him out. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you
-John

You dont need code reader. A paper clip will work. Is the engine light on at all?

I dont think so. My friend just called me and told me what was going on, but im sure he would mention the light if it was lit. How do you check the codes?

I think most big automotive chains will check your codes for free. What engine is it? Check the fuel pressure and the timing. Check all of the vacuum lines. Harbor Freight has vacuum testers for around 12 bucks. What other symptoms are there?
