Why does my car shift at ~8k?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJF76JhtP-E

a little video might be hard to see but you see the stock tachometer go to 7k which is the max and then the aftermarket tach goes to 8k which you can't see. My old camaro shifted at like 6.5k why do you think it is shifting so high?

I am going to make the guess that you have both tachs in 4 cylinder mode. That honestly didn't sound like it would up any more than 4,000-4,500 rpm. I tried once to rev a 350 TBI in a truck to 6,000 rpm. Valve float and air flow restriction held the engine to no more than 5,300 rpm, foot on the floor in first gear.

I can tell you that it is nothing near 8K. This engine is wound up pretty tight and its only turning 6,700 when the rev-limiter kicks in.

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

you were no where near 7~8000 RPM.
with the gear you have you would have been well over 100 MPH on the 2-3 shift, im guessing probably close to 140~150 or so, but im not going to do the math to figure it out
your stock tach needs to be fixed, set the aftermarket tach to 8 cylinders.

Agreed, no where near 7-8k rpm I've only had mine up to 7500 rpm before the limiter kicked in (msd) and the engine was singing.

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

The instructions for the aftermarket tach told me to set it to 6 cylinders.
You should have read the entire instruction.

It tells you, for a 6-cylinder motor, set the switch to 6 cylinders.

It also tells you, for a 4-cylinder motor, set it to 4; and for one with 8 cylinders, set it to {drum roll please} 8.

Your stock tach is wrong, as they usually are, it reads WAY high; and your other is inproperly installed. Fix the installation of the one, and ignore or replace the other.

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

actually for the aftermarket tach like I just said tells you to set it to 6. I did read the directions but 6 was way off from the stock tach so I set it to 4. I mean if you read my post instead of assuming you would have knew that already

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

No, it doesn't.

It says, like EVERY other aftermarket tach, to set the switch to match the number of cyls the engine actually has. There's 3 sparks per rev in a 6-cyl, and 4 sparks per rev in a 8-cyl; the tach has to be told how which constant to use. That's what the switch is for, in the first place.

Believe it. No point in arguing.

Set the switch to "8", ignore the defective stock tach, and move on.

Nothing else that you have posted, or could ever POSSIBLY post, will change how tachs work (or don't.... like your stock one).

well, do you have a 6 cylinder? does the new tach have a switch that says 8? dude, this is common sense. and by the way, there is absolutely no way your motor was turning 8,000 rpm. sounded like 4k at most.

Then it's wrong. A typo or whatever.

Put it at 8 for a V8.

BELIEVE IT.

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

Read this very carefully. If you have an 8 cylinder engine, set the tach to 8 cylinders. Then, grab a lighter and the instructions, set the instructions on fire.

btw, here's an in-car video a friend took while riding with me at the strip. I was shifting at about 7,000 rpm, the burnout I'm guessing was between 6,000 and 6,500.

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

never mind those other guys, keep it at 6 and tell everyone the reason you turn so many rpms at hiway speeds is you have 6:13 gears.
Better yet change it to 4, you could have a real bad azz car then.

Prove it to yourself, hook up a scan tool and see what RMPs the ecm is seeing.

Yeah, for a TBI 305, that's about right... that's what those usually do.

Sounds like you're good to go, and you're getting THE TRUTH from your new tach now.

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

this must be your first v8. You had a honda before this car didn't you?

If you had ever driven a car with a stock v8, you'd know that 4 thousand is way up there for it. I'd hate to see you in a diesel....

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

Damn, this whole thread had me rolling. Pretty funny, your car is a V8, ur tach had a switch for 8 cylinders and you put it on 4. Even if the instructions were a misprint, you should still acknowledge that 8 goes for V8. 6 for the V6 and so on. I know this was all already mentioned but, good stuff.

Re: Why does my car shift at ~8k?

C'mon guys, let's not rag on him any more....

He manned up to his mistake, even admitted it on the Internet, and now he's fixed it. I doubt any of the rest of us would like for people to keep kicking us even after we fessed up like that, let's not do it to him either.

Even though it was kind of weird for awhile.

But yeah, the whole experience of buying a supposedly "performance" car and getting a LG4 or L03, has gotta be a bit of a surprise for somebody that wasn't around to remember that at the time, it was tough to do much better than that.

yea well I would expect the directions to be right after all. I am learning about cars why do you guys have to be such ******? I know it's a freakin 8cylinder but it still said to set it to a 6. I don't normally use directions but what do you want from me? The first aftermarket tach I installed get over yourselves.

robster66, your not the first to make this mistake, & you won't be the last by a long shot.
something to remember, sometimes the directions are wrong. there is no telling how many times they were translated from one language to another.

this may help you repair your factory tach,

robster66: Its the internet... Gotta have thick skin sometimes! Most of the guys that you think are being "******" are just having some fun...and most of them would gladly help you out in the future. You know...if you were an X-Box 360 genius, and someone came onto an X-Box 360 forum and asked how to put a game in... Might get some ribbing haha.

Glad to hear you worked it out. Learning about your car is the fun part!!! Now go build yourself a motor to spin to 7500 and have some fun!!!
