are 081's good stock?
I have a 350, and a good set of stock 081's am i good to make some power if i just port these guys and slap them on? or do they need larger valves to make any power? im kind of on a budget and anything right now will be better than my 193 swirl ports...
and what cam would i need? a 260 duration probably?

081's will bump that compression up. I am not sure what valves are in those heads, i thought they were the same as the 083's which are 1.94/1.50. If not get those valves put in.
a decent port job will really help those heads. STock form they arent good, but with mild porting they will definately open up and make some power.
As far as a cam, depends on your rpm range and goals for power. a 268 advertised duration wouldnt be a bad choice, depending on if your getting roller cam or flat tappet

itll def need a port the exhaust is horrible.

actually youre better off with your 193s as long as youre not revving to the moon with the motor. they heads flow very well as is and ported can flow even better. check the site someone has ported 193s flowing as well as vette 113's i think it was. possibly more.

58cc chambers, 165-ish cc intake, 1.84/1.50 valves is stock. They are basically the same as the #416 castings, only with the different intake bolt pattern and centerbolt valve covers.

yeah the car pulls pretty good, probably only needs the advance set and a set of gears.
but i was told a couldnt get a cam to work better on this motor. is that true? is there a great cam for it?

a little bit bigger than stock sized L98 would work great on that motor with those heads, both unported and ported. I really think it needs a 1.94 intake valve like on the 083 L98 heads.
Out the box, they dont flow well at all, but still can benefit from a cam

Re: are 081's good stock?
the 193 are ok for what they are stock i think theyre like 170-175 intake and 140-150 exhaust thats just my guess but i know its in the general area close to that because 081s are 180-185 intake and 110 exhaust. keep your heads they only say such a large cam because of the lift hitting retainer to seals which will happen on any stock head at roughly the same amount.

yeah they would need machined for screw in studs and guide boss ground down to handle bigger lift cams

Re: are 081's good stock?
Depends on the cam. Something with a really fast ramp, lots of lift, and the springs to match - yes. But for something like just an L98 cam or LT1 cam (my recomendation is the LT1 stick) that kind of machinework isn't really necessary.
