stepping up my cam.. help?
first idea was to have my bird a daily driver and some occasional street racing.. now ive decided i wanna be able to street drive it like friday nights to go do my street racing.. but i wanna run the strip and make some good below 13 second times..now i guess ill get to teh point i want to step up to a lopey idle cam and vaccume canisters dont matter to me ill get whatever i need but i wanna be able to street drive with a lope idle too..
engine is a rebuild 350-355 with speed pro 5cc dome pistons its got 72cc heads match ported to a holly contender manifold and headers. 670cfm holly street avenger and as of now it got a crane energizer with .454 272 duration stats and its just not doin what i want.. anyone know a good cam to match to my set up?

I notice in your sig you say ported heads. What heads. This is the imprtant factor. A monster cam in an engine with **** poor heads will be nothing but a dog. Down low where the heads flow, the cam is weak, and up high where the cam is strong the heads are soft. You end up with a trailer queen that sounds awesome and cant get out of its own way.

read, read, read. pick up a book. your stock heads are the bottle neck i assume. Its not that easy to just make great horsepower it takes alot of research i promise. You already have the wrong approach " i want a lopey idle cam" that is all backwards thinking in my opinion.

Moving to Tech / General Engine since this is not Aftermarket Product Review.

Once again, what kind of heads do you have?

Re: stepping up my cam.. help?
i havnt updated my sig since i rebuilt the engine in the bird sorry about that... i had 882 heads on it n 76cc smogger heads werent going to do what i wanted.. i got on ebay and i found a set of aluminum heads they are edelbrocks with 2.02 1.62 valves 72cc chambers i belive they are performer rpm heads not sure ill find out if its neccicary and i did the matching myself in class.. also i am completely aware of what a lopey idle cam does and doesnt do but i dig the hell outa the sound. i wanna now if anyone knows a good street/strip cam cuz all ive ever dealt with is crane energizer and comp high energy cams

What is your measured, exact compression ratio?
including deck height. Was the block decked at all?

Re: stepping up my cam.. help?
Well the comp ratio from speed pro was 9.31:1 with 76cc with these 72's i think im going to be running a bit higher than that anywho the senior tech at my school told me to check out comps 'thumpr' cam with the lowest rpm range they offer.. anyone have any comments on a thumpr? ive checked it out on comps site and it looks promasing and sounds great but anyone ever use one?

Re: stepping up my cam.. help?
No, thumpr's are junk. They are also roller cams, and I thought this was a non-roller block? Still, they aren't what you want.
That information on your CR is garbage. You need real, measured, actual numbers. You will NEED to measure your deck height. I think you'll want to run a thinner head gasket at this point. I also wasn't aware speed pro made 5cc *dome* pistons. I know 5cc dish (valve reliefs exist), but 5cc of dome is barely enough dome to be called a dome. What is the part # on the pistons? Was the block DECKED, yes or no? This is crucial.
And yea, I have a funny feeling you don't have enough CR to run a very big cam. You're probably in the sweet spot now, unless you're ready to make some changes.

Re: stepping up my cam.. help?
ok i was wrong on my first posts of both the heads and the pistons these are what is in right now (i apologize about confusion i got the heads from ebay they were listed as 72 but i checked part numbers myself)
http://www.jegs.com/p/Sealed+Power/7...10002/-1/10219
scroll to the sbc .30 over set they have 2.4cc dome
heads are exactly as follows
SB-Chevy 302-400ci Performer RPM Aluminum Cylinder Head
170cc Intake Ports
70cc Combustion Chambers
2.020''/1.600'' Valves
1.460'' Valve Springs, .575'' Max Lift
3/8'' Rocker Studs
Straight Plug
and im not sure i had the machine work done as a master rebuild and i put it back together myself thats all i can say about the engine build.. as for thumpr being roller they just came out with a flat tappet set with these stats
Thumpr Hydraulic Flat Tappet Cams
279/297 Adv/Dur
2000-5800 RPM Range
Lift: 479 Intake/465 Exhaust
also im looking at a lunati voodoo cam anyone have any opinions oin them?

Re: stepping up my cam.. help?
ok, the
844-8-KL2304F30 ones?
This should be your CR. The quench is pretty far from ideal, and the CR is a tad low.
Thumpr is still junk.
Voodoo 60103 or comp xe268h is about as big as you want to go on that setup. Still head and shoulders above what you have in it now.

the xe268h?... thats the extreme energy grind right?.. im using a 268h high energy in my camaro and it runs pretty well considering it has half the work this engine has in it.. i think ill check it out and run a 50 shot with 120 race feul for track nights.. thnx for the help
