Loose Brake Pads maybe?

Hey guys,

My left front wheel keeps making a slight rubbing noise (metal on metal)....my best guess is that it is a loose break pad.
The sound is a very light scrape like a pad resting on the disc, versus actual "binding" which would be tight.

(it stops every time I tap the brakes, but comes back 10 seconds later)

I will prob have the wheel off this weekend to look...

Any ideas what else it may be and any signs of wear in particular I should be looking for while I am there?

Probably your wear indicator telling you to replace the pads before the rotors get chewed up.

Re: Loose Brake Pads maybe?

Could well be the wear indicator.

If that's OK, and the little "ears" on the outboard pad aren't bent over to make them grab onto the caliper, bend them. A BFH works well.

I hope it's not the wear indicator, the pads and discs were new 6 months ago! LOL

Re: Loose Brake Pads maybe?

It can still be.

All it is, is a little "flag" of metal riveted onto the end of the one pad. If it gets bent the wrong way (like, if the box they were in got dropped somewhere along the line, or something) it can very easily be up against the rotor and making its annoying racket, from the minute the pads are first installed.

It's definitely worth a look.

good to know - thanks for the info

PS - any tips or tricks for getting the calipers off etc?

or are they pretty much as you would expect?
(eg, bolts tight as f*ck but simple other than that)

Re: Loose Brake Pads maybe?

If you just replaced the break shoes 6 months ago, then the calipers should come off pretty easily.

Re: Loose Brake Pads maybe?

Right; and the bolts shouldn't be all that tight, anyway. But you know how things that should be are... namely, however they are, instead of how they should be.

Re: Loose Brake Pads maybe?

3/8" allen key (or was it 5/16"?) is needed for the caliper bolts. Remove wheels, remove the caliper bolts, and give the calipers a few love taps from your itty bitty hammer (not necessary to bring out the BFH), and it'll come right off.

I think I'd remove the wheel, and then look everything over very carefully before removing anything else.
