Annoying Oil Leak

My car leaks oil somewhere near the back of the engine.

As the car warms you can see the smoke and the burning oil smell.

The underside of the engine is kinda oily. It is only in the back, near the firewall... as far as the oily smoke.

Also at idle there is white smoke, and i will assume its not ( and hope not) it being a head gasket. Could the exhaust smoke be cause by this oil leak?

Thanks!

Oh yeah the oil smoke smell can be smelt inside the car.

Re: Annoying Oil Leak

could be a head gasket or a rear main seal. I just did a rear main seal on my friends 350 in his full size van cause it was leaking oil all over the back of the motor. Does it blow smoke out the exhaust as well at engine startup? Gives us some more details if you can.

Re: Annoying Oil Leak

There was significant oil on the rear spark plug and wire on the leaking side...

And not sure about on the other side...

The smoke occurs on the drivers side...

sounds more like a head gasket to me.

Re: Annoying Oil Leak

valve cover seal. thats the only place that it could drip on the back of the engine, and drip down onto the spark plugs, wires and exhaust. your rear main would only show on the bottom rear of the engine, a blown head gasket wouldn't be able to drip up onto the spark plug wires, etc.

Replace those seals, wipe down the engine, and see where that leaves you.

exactly. get a pair of the rubberized type... seal better and longer than the cork or paper like ones. i would replace both if i were you... if one is bad, the other one is probably getting there.

Re: Annoying Oil Leak

Is it near the top? Check to make sure the distributor seal is intact. Not sure, but it could also be a bad oil sending unit. Both very easy fixes and both will drip oil on a hot engine.
