Re: safe 305 bore????

My machine shop goes .080 over on 87+ 350s all the time, a 305 should be just as capable if not more since the cylinders are further apart.

Re: safe 305 bore????

A rough guess would be .020 over bore, there would be no power gain really, 2 cubes would be 1.6-2.2 hp depending on parts, i hope power isnt a goal.

You can go out to 4.001" by spending $50 on a 350 block...

Re: safe 305 bore????

.080" ? Yea, ok now go find pistons to fit that
.060" is about the max, and i'd want to sonic check that. That makes it a 310CID engine. You don't BORE an engine to get more cubes for HP. Boring it doesn't give enough cubes to make a difference. Stroking it, yes. But still, a 305 isn't a good core to start with. Stroke (and bore if necessary) a 350, and then you're cooking with gas.
Word.

How far apart the cylinder walls are is irrelevant. How thick the cylinder walls are is relevant.

Just because the cylinder walls are farther apart doesn't mean they're thicker. They typically shoot for the same thickness. Due to casting core shift, they might be thinner.

Regardless, anything over .030" and you're taking a risk.

And, any consideration of boring a 305 block could be considered a poor use of rebuild dollars, and certainly is a poor use of performance dollars.

.
Just what i have heardm 350 walls are thicker than a 400 but a 305 should be the same as the 350.

Re: safe 305 bore????

Well I believe the OP should know the limits of the 305 before dumping a bunch of money into it and being disappointed later.

Re: safe 305 bore????

http://www.wallaceracing.com/cid.php

Guys talk about "their" adventure of a bore size of .080 which is unnecessarily high risk when considering 305's blocks are so cheap to get or free.

Still even with a enlarged bore size, the limited factor is the bore shrouding the intake valve and it not flowing well.Maybe one reason why the turbo 305's are so popular.Yet the guys running 305's in super stock drag racing are very, very, stout. But that is major money spent on them.

I am all about guys wanting to do things their own way as all as they know what issues they are going to have in front of them.

Ross pistons. They make all kinds of pistons. They even made pistons for a couple of old 1920's Miller Indy race engines.

Yea, I wouldn't start boring a block without knowing the wall thickness first. I don't remember the casting numbers off hand but there were a few 70's castings that were really bad.

I want to choke people who resurrect 5-1/2 year old threads and post on them like it's a current discussion...

The OP hasn't posted on TGO for 4-1/2 years.

The "Don't tell me to get a 350" stuff gets old, too. The OP never said he didn't want a 350, he asked how much he could bore a 305. We never got to the bottom of what he was trying to do before he quit posting.

Don't be presumptuous. In this case, it wasn't presumptuous to suggest getting a 350 block rather than spending money boring a 305 block.
