Aftermarket CAI Worthwhile?

Is it worth adding an aftermarket cold-air intake to a 1991 L98 Formula? If so, who makes a good one? The stock set-up looks pretty restrictive... Thanks!

Re: Aftermarket CAI Worthwhile?

Nobody has any info on this? I'm thinking of buying the EBay one, or perhaps trying to build my own from Home Depot stuff. Any input would be great...thanks!

Home depot

We used PVC pipes to test a theory on the dyno and we came up with this:

As long as the pipes are large enough to flow the air and fairly smooth inside you will be fine.

Thanks for the reply, but what did you come up with? I can't see an image or anything. What size PVC did you use? Were you able to use the factory brackets, or did you make your own? Thanks in advance!

i meant the theory. lol sry. if you can fit it i'd try 3in pipe routed into the floor or someplace with a cooler air location.

we tried it on an 02 SS ls1 camaro and gained a few HP just by running a pvc pipe

Even the K&N that mounts directly to the TB snout? That would be the easiest route, I suppose...

Re: Aftermarket CAI Worthwhile?

theres a ebay one for sale for firebirds that looks nice. local buddy of mine has one. its a full 3" unit and more than enough flow for most sub 375-400whp builds

else build your own outof some pipe and couplings....its really easy

i just made my own 3.5" setup on my camaro, including custom MAF sensor which on a 91 you dont have so its even easier for you to create your own setup

Re: Aftermarket CAI Worthwhile?

Yah, I like the looks of the EBay one and the price isn't TOO ridiculous. However, I was concerned about the heat transfer through the aluminum tubing. Maybe some heat-wrap?

Re: Aftermarket CAI Worthwhile?

it will get hot but most of the air will flow thru without picking up alot of heat. you could heat wrap it but i dont think its gonna kill your power that much as long as its picking up cool air from outside teh car

I think I'll give the EBay one a whirl and maybe coat it at a later date. I'm lazy... Thanks, guys!

Re: Aftermarket CAI Worthwhile?

The one that's usually on ebay is not a true CAI. All it does is to provide less restriction. If you want a true CAI you have to get your filter OUT of the engine bay or at the very least block it from the engine heat.
