TIMING ISSUES PLEASE HELP!

I installed a Compcams XR282HR-10 into a 383 TPI motor and I'm having an idle issue with it. When I set base timing to 10 degrees the engine is surging/hunting for an idle constantly. I've had to retard the timing to less than zero in order for the idle to even out not to mention that the headers started glowing. The cam is installed straight up on a gear drive. My scanner is showing between 25 and 28 deg at idle. What's happening here? Did I get a screwed up cam or did I screw up? Thanks in advance(no pun intended). If you need more information please let me know.

I'm running a External coil HEI distributor but the actual ignition is a Jacobs Ultra Team. How would retarding the timing cause the headers to glow? It melted my JET fan switch connector.

Re: TIMING ISSUES PLEASE HELP!

by retarding the timing you have moved the point of combustions further into the exhaust stroke ie the charge is still burning strong as it enters the headers

But why is it that when I advance the timing the engine starts to hunt for an idle? The idle evens out only when the timing is retarded. Could this be a symptom of the camshaft and crank marks not being lined up correctly?
