Getting no codes

So, I plugged in a paper clip into the ALDL connector in the A and B teminals in my 92 Camaro, waited like 2 minutes for codes and I did not get any. According to the FAQ, it's defective and needs to get replaced? How could this be?

Did you turn the ignition switch to "on"?

Make sure you're getting the paper clip into the terminals, and into the correct terminals.

Is the SES light coming on during operation?

Re: Getting no codes

I am putting it in the correct terminals. The SES light its supposed to go through that pause-flash process and then show codes, but it never shows the codes.

Is there a problem you're trying to chase down? Does the SES light come on when you are driving it?

Re: Getting no codes

that was the problem with my '87 (SES always on and no codes). i determined that the computer was dead after some meter readings. if that is the case, the SES is on as a failsafe when the computer is dead. i would check to make sure there is power to the computer.

Re: Getting no codes

Damn. So what do I do? Would getting it scanned with a ALDL scanner make a difference?

Re: Getting no codes

as long as you are jumping the right terminals a scanner would be no different.

what you should do is to test for power on the computer. from what i remember about mine is that there is a fuseable link between the battery and the computer, so you might want to check if that is blown. you should also check all of the fuses to see if any are blown.

Re: Getting no codes

You mean a fuse in the fuse block under the drive side dash?
Nevermind...fusible links...something i cant do. I have no idea how to do what you just said.

Should be a fuse, not a fusible link.

Re: Getting no codes

Ok, I looked in my handbook and there is a fuse for the Computer Command Control-10 amp(which i have to get) and then ECM crank unit-3 amps. Should I replace that one too?

Re: Getting no codes

only replace fuses if blown. then grab the volt meter and start getting some readings off of the computer.

Ok, neither of the fuses i mentioned are blown. You want me to stick the voltmeter in both of the terminals?

Re: Getting no codes

no, into the terminals/wire on/to the computer. check out some good wiring diagrams first though. you want to figure out which wire powers the ECM

Could you point me into the right direction with this diagram and where I need to test?

Re: Getting no codes

my service manual doesnt have the diagram for the TPI motors, but if you find one the wire you need is the wire that powers the ECM. you are going to need to unplug the harness from the ECM and test the wire that powers it. if you found the fusable link it should be the same wire so you could follow that.

Re: Getting no codes

Well I have the TBI. Does that make a difference? Because I looked in my Hayne's Manual and it only had the diagram for Engine Control System 5.0 and 5.7 TPI.
